Why choose atheism?

"Agnosticism is the view that the truth values of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, as well as other religious and metaphysical claims—are unknown or unknowable." Agnosticism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Meaning either 'can't know' or 'don't know'.For the last time: Atheism is about belief! Belief! Belief! Belief! A person who doesn't know is an agnostic not an atheist!

Does atheism have scripture? a doctrine? clergy? an ethic? anything sacred at all?

Dude, it's in the religion DIR. What am I supposed to be Sherlocke Holmes here?
Religion DIR=Religion.
Consider that even though atheism isn't a religion by strict dictionary
definition, it nonetheless functions like one in some respects:
1) It is a view about the supernatural.
2) It is a counterpart (evil twin?) of religion.
3) It receives legal protection (in Americastan) on par with religion.

Yeah, that too.

An atheist as well. Lacking belief in God is all it takes, you know.
A person who doesn't know is an agnostic a person who doesn't believe is an atheist. An agnostic can perfectly well be a theist who doesn't know but believes. An agnostic is not automatically an atheist as well.

The definition I've seen uses 'dis-belief'.
Yes, many definitions are obsolete. Use this one: "The more common understanding of atheism among atheists is "not believing in any gods." No claims or denials are made - an atheist is any person who is not a theist. Sometimes this broader understanding is called "weak" or "implicit" atheism. There is also a narrower sort of atheism, sometimes called "strong" or "explicit" atheism. Here, the atheist explicitly denies the existence of any gods - making a strong claim which will deserve support at some point." From about.com.

No. It's just an absence of belief in gods. Theism is a belief in the existence of one or more gods. Theism doesn't have scripture or a doctrine or clergy or ethic or anything sacred either. For that you have to build some religion around the god belief.

No it isn't, it's just an absence of belief in gods. Nothing prevents an atheist from believing in anything supernatural if it doesn't involve gods.
2) It is a counterpart (evil twin?) of religion.
No it isn't. Everybody is an atheist until they become a theist. (atheist literally means 'not theist') The counterpart of religion is irreligion. Some atheists and theists are irreligious.

No. Atheism is just a single positi8n - the absence of a belief in god.

Atheists can have scripture, clergy, doctrine etc - anything you can imagine, itis just not a facet of atheism.
