I was at the same place not so long ago myself. I did not understand my place in this existence. I was not a huge reader and although I knew there was some truth in written scripture and teachings, I could not fully understand it. Think of it this way....Where did the "Awakened or Enlightened Ones" gain THEIR knowledge. They did not read it in books or learn it from others, from what I understand of it anyways. How did they then receive that knowledge? They found a place of solitude in nature wherever it may have been and they let the knowledge of the "enlightened ones" come too them. When we achieve that "stillness of mind", the knowledge becomes available to us. You know how the Native Americans used to always say "Trees Speak". It is true, they have many things to teach us, we only need "listen". Go into nature and have an open mind. It will communicate to you in many ways. We are all enlightened, sometimes we just don't "remember". That is why nature and life is there, so they can help us to "remember".
Peace.
