To me, each believer's God looks like their own self-image, idealized. To me, God the Father looks like Richard Nixon:
Do you have a pic or cartoon of anyone you picture God resembling?
Christianity requires a lot of self-denial, and submitting to biblical truths a believer initially may not like or want to believe, do you really think this applies to all believers? To me, each believer's God looks like their own self-image, idealized.
So, are you saying Mary wasn't a girl from Kansas that wandered through cornfields and spoke with tin men and scarecrows?I notice this is not in the joke thread. So I'm just wondering if you're aware that she would have been Middle Eastern and not Caucasian.
I think it applies to the vast majority of believers. I've yet to meet a believer whose god disagreed with them to any serious degree.Christianity requires a lot of self-denial, and submitting to biblical truths a believer initially may not like or want to believe, do you really think this applies to all believers?
I couldn't say God 'disagreed' on anything with me, because I submit to His word as truth. Are there truths in the Bible I found difficult to accept, or tried to avoid? Of course, but I believed them and came to see the beauty in them. In fact you could look at my posts from years ago as proof, there's one point where I proclaim homosexuality must be okay if it's not a choice, as if that's some great groundbreaking logic, when really it's just what I wanted to believe. Eventually though I could not avoid the clear teaching of Scripture. I'm sure it is similar for many believers, in fact I am certain it is so from the friends I have at church who have gone through similar things with teachings they didn't want to accept or found difficult in doing so.I think it applies to the vast majority of believers. I'm also not sure of the extent of the self-denial you describe. I think it's more often about impulse control (i.e. prioritizing one's "long term" self over immediate desires) than it is about actual self-denial.
IMO, the vast majority of the time, a person's god is an anthropomorphism of the best (by their own estimation) aspects of themselves.
Scripture... like Romans 14:4?I couldn't say God 'disagreed' on anything with me, because I submit to His word as truth. Are there truths in the Bible I found difficult to accept, or tried to avoid? Frankly, I think the Bible is so ambiguous, contradictory, and supportive of multiple interpretations that anyone can use it to support virtually any position. I've heard it described as "the Big Book of Multiple Choice", and I think the term fits.I'm sure it is similar for many believers, in fact I am certain it is so from the friends I have at church who have gone through similar things with teachings they didn't want to accept or found difficult in doing so.
You've never met a believer whose God disagrees with Him? Well nice to meet you. I excessively meet that description.I think it applies to the vast majority of believers. I've yet to meet a believer whose god disagreed with them to any serious degree.

Aw...I'm so glad I could help!As an aside, for what it's worth (and I know this is random), due
to having revisited my collection of Krishna images to share
here, it seems to have reignited my love for the Lord into a
more active state. This is refreshing, given that I had been
feeling somewhat 'agnosticated' for awhile now.
So I thank you, PopeADope, for starting this thread.
