I think there is a difference in translations. I dont know Arabic, so I dont know which one is more appropriate. But nothing in my post changes with either translation. My point is that the Quran permitted polygamy in those existing circumstances and those circumstances not prevailing anymore, polygamy should no longer be treated as sanctioned. The egalitarian spirit of Islam, coupled with its natural justice as existing in today's society doesntjustify polygamy.
Also note that scholars such as Muhammad Abduh have also given arguments such that polygamy demands justice(4:3) which isnt possible by 4:129, and hence it shouldnt be allowed.
