Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

You don't have to know it all in order to know something.

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

And philosophy has a very poor track record for finding the truth. First, philosophers disagree with each other. Each makes their arguments, and all seem to reach conclusions, but the end results all differ. That shows the process is unreliable. Second, even when the majority of philosophers...

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

No, violence has been around as long as life has been. Living things have been eating other living things from the beginning of life. The world has not been corrupted by violence; it was born with violence. Civilization is the process of pulling ourselves *up* from that world of violence and...

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

No, names are conventions and need to be used correctly. There is no such thing as 'north' when you are at the North Pole. There is only 'south'. Similarly, there is no such thing as 'south' when at the South Pole. There is only 'north' there. That is the reality. Analogously, at the BB there...

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

No, it also works in any number of dimensions. The surface of the Earth is a two dimensional manifold. Spacetime is a four dimensional manifold. And, in fact, the 'singularity' at the BB in general relativity is very similar to the 'singularity' in the coordinate system of the Earth at the south...

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

Most of philosophy is simply confirmation bias on the part of the author. So, yes, the vast majority of philosophy is nonsense. Philosophy is best when pointing out flaws in arguments and hidden assumptions. it is worst when it claims to make conclusions. It is best done while drinking with...

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

The direction on the celestial sphere pointing to the pole is north. There is no such direction at the pole.
  8. Polymath257

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

Yes, the axis of spin is a direction in space. But that direction *is not north*.

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

And this wasn't just an analogy, but is a simplified version of the actual theory.

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

I think it is almost certain that there can be no cause for the universe as a whole (including a multiverse if such exists). Causality is *within* the universe and requires physical laws. That means that there cannot be a cause of causality and thereby no cause of the universe.

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

What other forms of evidence do you propose? of course there is! Morality isn't determined by science. Aesthetics is not determined by science. The difference is that those are not forms of *knowledge*, but rather of shared opinions. The difference is testability. Such as?

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

A direction is a vector. The vector for 'north' is a tangent vector to the sphere. No such tangent vector exists at the North Pole. There is no direction 'north' when at the North Pole.

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

Experience: testing our ideas to see if they work. if we go slightly beyond that and *try* to make them fail, we are doing science.
  14. Polymath257

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

And can thoughts be wrong and experiences misinterpreted? if so, how do you guard against such?
  15. Polymath257

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

I think it fundamentally misunderstands the notion of 'cause'.
  16. Polymath257

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

What makes you think there was a cause at all?
  17. Polymath257

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

No, that axis does NOT point in the direction of north. It points in the direction of *up* at the north pole. If you have a place in the sky, the direction of 'north' is towards that axis. It is not possible to go further north if you are on that axis. This also ignores the fact that you are...

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

We don't know. The data isn't known that would make that determination. Once again, we need a tested theory of quantum gravity to say more about the very early universe and what, if anything, was before.
  19. Polymath257

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

Not true if you include any potential multiverse.

Why Didn't the Universe Always Exist?

Very few will positively claim that time starts at the BB. Instead, they point out that the best descriptions we currently have predict that and that it is thereby a strong possibility. But, as I have pointed out numerous times, quantum corrections might change that evaluation.
