    No it doesn't. It means "above" or "the", it doesn't mean "a deity", that's a late definition. It originally referred to a single deity, "El", the ultimate god, the one above all, hence the meaning of his name being "above".

    BS in Mechanical Engineering, Master's in Nuclear Physics.
