Does Christmas have anything to do with Christ?

Of course it was ripped off by early Christians. Puritans in the New England area in the 16th century outlawed any celebrations of it including decorations. Because it originated from pagans.

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

I purposely titled this thread the way I did to challenge whether or not Christianity would have survived without a filter. You're doing what I had described. You're filtering the text of the Bible to fit your interpretation presumably based on what you were told. That's why, I think...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Some more info on Catholics banning the Bible. Bible possession once banned by the Catholic Church! Sources are within that link that can be reviewed but a good collection.

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Catholics banned public ownership of the Bible. Presumably so that peasants could not interpret on their own. Vatican Reveals Bible Was Once Banned Book Why Popes banned the Bible

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Very well stated. In my neck of the woods, we call these folks hard right Christians, AKA, Tea Party voters.

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

As did I. Mother has played the organ and piano for churches in the south starting at the age of 12. Also played weddings, funerals and worked as a music director for 3 decades before retiring. Father was a minister. They met in the Seminary. I'm pretty well versed on the topic as well.

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Whatever you say. However, I recommend you do some research. This is not a new accusation of early Catholic leadership. I'm surprised how certain you are that this never happened. As soon as I hit 15 posts, I can post the sources to some info on this subject including the associated press.

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

I'm not going into a micro level of detail to make a point so we can debate who's historical knowledge is the best. Fact is, the Church leadership in Europe right before and after 1000 AD DID ban public ownership of the Bible, period. Of course there were exceptions. It was political. But to...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Exodus 21:2-6 Acknowledging and allowing slavery. Exodus 31:15 Death for working on the Sabbath. Noah's flood was cruel and unjust. Commanding Joshua to sack Jericho and kill every man, woman and child, presumably because the inhabitants worshiped Moloch. Jesus stating that marrying a...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Fast forward to right now. If the church on faith said, "let's close our doors and stop preaching the gospel for 1 year. During that year, we will only promote the reading of the Bible to see if people remained with the church we we opened our doors again." If people actually read the Bible...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Got your point. I've debated this topic and especially the Islamic religion for years so I'm familiar with cultural points from that region. Consider this. When the Catholic church owned the religion in 1000 AD est. they had called owning any translation of the Old or New testaments heresy...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Wait, what? I former Christian telling another former Christian that the way I read the Bible, that I will miss a lot? That's what I would expect a Christian to tell me. An opinion on what someone could gain from a book is very subjective. I also believe fully that what was written is...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

You're only talking a few thousand people in a very concentrated area though. I think without a talking head, the message would be lost in a couple generations. One reason I think like this is what I "hear" Christians say they believe and who told them what the Bible said. Look at the story...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Sharing an example of my experience growing up and why am such an avid anti-theist: What I heard in church regarding Job's test was, "And the Devil challenged God that his servant Job would turn away if he wasn't blessed with riches, family, etc. God allowed the Devil to do anything he wanted...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Rusra02, you are assuming everyone decides to follow a Christian doctrine (which one?) globally making everyone the same. Of course, if everyone was the same and like minded regardless of what religion you choose, there will be world peace. No debate there. That could mean everyone practices...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

Well considering there's so many different flavors of Christianity, I'm not sure it's ever been dharmic, as you say. What I see in the U.S. and different regions varying teachings of Christianity and varying degrees of right and wrong per the religion. I believe that Religion was brought on by...

Would Christianity Survive without the filter of a Church?

What this means is: If it was not the first church's that put the Bible together in the first place, would Christianity exist? Without the filter of a minister, would you be able to read the Bible independently and get a moral compass from it that would work in any culture, especially...

    Creationism and kinds

"Kind" is a term that Creationists use to try to tell scientists how evolution works. But that's not how evolution works. Evolution didn't say that single celled organisms evolved into a "kind" of animal. They evolved into many different species that could adapt to their environment. That's...
