“Why are atheists so interested in God?”

Forums need something to discuss. We discuss other things too, politics, science, etc.
I asked questions when you made a comment.
Exactly that turned me in an atheist - a Hindu with 330 million Gods (so they say).
well.....with only 7billion possible worshippers......

who gets the pick of the litter?

Honestly some of the questions he's asked would be found on an average exam in a primary school classroom. (...)

And there are some who quite frankly deserve being talked down to. (...)

It's not even a religious thing, really.(...)

So true!

I also don't know if I buy into the whole micro vs macro evolution thing. Simply because as far as I can see, macro is simply micro accumulated. I mean what separates them specifically?
Nothing. It is an entirely arbitrary, fictional construct.

One ignorant or foolish thing I’ve seen people saying about atheists is some variation of “If atheists really don’t believe in God, then why are they so interested in Him?” This is sometimes followed by saying or insinuating that they must secretly really believe in God, or have some need or desire to.

Maybe what they’re so interested in is not God himself, but the popularity of believing in some God-with-a-capital-G or other? Maybe the reason they’re so interested in that is because of the popularity of using some God-with-a-capital-G as an excuse for cruelty, vandalism, violence and oppression?

ETA: Including vandalizing forums, and intrusive, invasive and oppressive behavior in forums.

Religion never bothered me greatly. I went to a Church of England Primary School and attended Religious Education classes. At that time, I probably believed that there was a Jesus Christ. I had had it driven into me enough so it was only natural.

Over the intervening years, I have gradually drifted away from being a believer to becoming an Atheist.

It was only when I realised what Islam was all about that I had to take religion seriously again, because Islam is mainly about me whether I like it or not.

I do not mind what people believe or do not believe provided I am not affected by those beliefs.

Unfortunately, God/Allah is being forced upon me no matter how I object.

I was content being an Atheist before Islam was introduced into my country.

I guess the question is, why do they get so emotional when talking about God.
Often it's because "God" was given as the reason why their family is shunning them.

Or why they got fired.

Or why their spouse left them.

Or, in some parts of the world, why they've been attacked or their loved ones were killed.

It's also - again, depending on where you live - just the incessant religious background noise.

If I'm in the store and Celine Dion comes on over the PA, I'll leave the store. Nothing against her as a person; I've just heard her music so much that now it sets my teeth on edge. You can do the same thing to a person with religion... just bombard them with "have a blessed day" and Jesus fish and religious wall-hangings and Christian rock on the office radio and people proselytizing at you when they find out you're not religious and on and on and on.

And speaking personally, I get especially infuriated any time we're talking about denial of rights... and atheists often run into issues with anti-secularists who want special privileges at the expense of the rights of others. That sort of thing riles me right up, but it's not a religious thing per se - I feel the same way about my provincial government's decision to unilaterally cut the size of Toronto City Council in half... and I don't even live in Toronto.

Are you talking about what I said, or how I said it, or both? The mockery and the hostility? Singling out people who believe in Gods?

The whole last 6 lines of your op were nothing but a crude display
of bigotry on your part.

And you dont even know it?

Ok....

Wel, the first thing you ever said to me was like
that. Semi retracted later with a half way sort of
thing that just made it worse, so I dont expect
you took the cure yet.

If you are engaged in some sort of spiritual quest,
you've some real basic stuff to work on before
you try for any of them higher planes.

then ban them. isn't it an ATHEIST forum?

I go to an LGBT forum but we dont all talk about LGBTQ stuff all the time. It's a social network for people who have something in common and we see the same worldview and understand problems like religion that makes people suicidal.

If atheists are indoctrinated or so have you and want to speak about god while not having evangelizing that's fine. Some need support and vent others just don't want to hear god bless you all the time when they talk about a non god related problem.

Well, that was the whole point of my OP.

But why? Why are we more interested in people’s beliefs in Gods, so much more than their beliefs in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, or electrons flying in circular orbits around a nucleus?

I am sure that the influence that the belief plays in society plays a role. For instance, I don’t know many toothfairiest who would say that gay marriages are against the will of the tooth fairy.

ETA: I’m wondering, is there anyone who doesn’t know yet that multitudes of clergy who preach for all the world every Sunday as if they believe in some God, believe in them about as much as parents who preach Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny to their children, believe in them?

Who knows? I only know that my ex pastor, while still being a pastor, had lost his faith a long time ago.

Strange boast, that you're even worse than you appear.
Proud of that?
Do you seriously want to have a discussion with me about my personality and character defects? We can if you want to, if you can’t find anything more fun to do in these forums.

Nah, you are not interesting, except maybe as one
of many sad examples of the spiritual sorts who
are such stone bigots, and lack the capacity to
recognize it.

I called you on it, you try to make it about me.

Iceberg, indeed.
