10 fingers good 12 fingers bad?

Being born with extra fingers - a condition known as polydactyly - affects one child in a thousand, some people will recognise Gemma Arterton from the Bond Movie, she was born with 12 fingers, almost immediately the doctor who delivered her tied off the extra fingers with sutures and they fell off, leaving just small scars​

If your child was born with the same condition what would you do, have the fingers removed or not?​

She had them removed and she looks happy too, and I guess if you are happy to have your picture taken you are ok with it.

I know some cultures think it is lucky while others are repulsed

Well, chances are that they are better at playing instruments, I guess..
More fingers on the piano, more snares to hit, more holes to cover for the flute. Imagine how fast they can type!
It is going to be more expensive if they are one of those who wants every finger to have a ring though, but that won't be my burden..


Btw, I have looked at my own hands about 10 times allready during this thread. Looking at your own hand doesn't really give examples of advantages of 12 fingers at all..

I always wanted another opposable thumb over the otherside, I used to put one hand on top of the other to imagine what it would be like. Some people got bored at school... not me :D

but i would only keep them if they were fully functional and not weirdly placed

I though about it and it has to come off. With a sixth finger per hand it would be impossible to give someone .. the finger.. as you no longer have one. I could never take way "the finger" from anybody, how would they survive traffic? :D

Nerds don't have adrenaline despite the words ' anal and nerd' being held within, they have cafeine and sugar rushes, not the same thing at all. Put your head down on your desk and have a nap you'll feel better.

I am a musician. I play string instruments. I could really go for a couple extra fingers if they work.

I mean, I can already just barely stretch an octave on my guitar. Think of what a sixth finger could do!

Edit: Nightcrawler is awesome too. Not enough fingers, but awesome.

I would but my retainer keeps tapping the desk and keeping me awake.

Would it actually be useful to have more fingers for music, I don't play so I don't know.

If they functioned it would sure increase my reach, so yeah I guess. For instance, when playing my cello, to quickly play octaves I need to use my thumb as a 5th finger.

No. However I would allowed extra fingers to be amputated later in life, and it be considered cosmetic surgery.
