127 Hours

I just got back from seeing "127 Hours," which was the story of Aron Ralston, the young man who cut off his own arm after having been trapped in a narrow canyon when a boulder rolled on top of his arm, crushing it. This incident took place in Canyonlands, Utah just a few years ago (2003, I think). I was on vacation just an hour or so away from where had been found the day before, when he stumbled out of the canyon, bleeding, dehydrated and almost delirious, five days after the accident. It's definitely NOT a movie for the squeemish, as the make-shift surgery was very graphically portrayed. Anyway, aside from the fact that I thought I was going to pass out, I highly recommend it.

Now, a question for you all: Could you have done that? Is your life that important to you?

Oh, I didn't realize James Franco was in that. He's a good actor.

No way!

In a pinch you take the best option you have. Wouldn't any reasonable person would have done the same?

I may have tried to do it, but due to my lack of knowledge about human physiology, I would have probably just hastened my own death. Actually, if I did choose to do it, it would not be because I wanted to live that much. It would be because I wanted to spare my family the agony of having me simply disappear, wondering what had happened to me and then, once my body was found (who knows how long after I was dead) agonizing over how horrible my death must have been.

Weird thing about me, if this was fiction I could watch it, but knowing it's not, I couldn't sit through it.
