1984 or 2001?

Warming to the theme, I don't think 2001 was intended as a prediction. It was a contemplation on intelligence and Mankind's place in the universe.

Well, given that it's 2022, neither 1984 nor 2001 were successful predictions. :D

Given that you reference three films that were adapted from written works though (like pretty much all great science fiction films), maybe cinema isn't the best place to be looking. Films are good for flashy visuals and big action but speculative fiction literature is the way to go for deeper meaning.

!984 was connected to the rise of the Soviet Union after WWII and how the USSR approached culture; socialist monarchy approach. If I recall the political left was sympathetic to the socialist movement back then. Bernie Sanders honeymooned in the Soviet Union and has had impact on defining American Socialism.

Regan was president in 1984. Regan was a spoiler in terms of Socialism, so 1984 did not come to be on its expected date. Regan played a role in making the USSR dissolve. The old Soviet Union would become a group of independent and free market countries and the fear of nuclear war would end. Had Regan lost, who knows if 1984 would have come to the USA. The Soviet Union had it supporters from the Left. Obama and Hillary pushed the reset button with Russia and Putin, who is now seeking to restore the Soviet Union first on Obama; Crimea and then on Biden's watch; Ukraine.

Trump was another spoiler. He rose to power during the formation of the EU, away from autonomous counties of old. The EU and NATO, formed a powerful team that would scare Russia to go backwards, to its ole days of centralized globalist socialism. Trump had no inkling to support Socialism or globalism. England became like Poland, who broke away from Big Brother causing the Left to freak out. He broke the momentum.

However, when Biden won, immediately there was a powerful move back to Socialism, with their $4T build back better socialism plan. This was stopped, internally, when the needed over spending was not allowed by two middle road Democrats. The pandemic approach of the Left had already become disruptive the economy. This bill would have harmed the free market of the entire world and could have been used to justify more central control. It did not go that far. The propaganda machine of the Left, on the other hand, lived up to 1984 expectations. We seem to be teetering, Socialism is strong but it cannot fully take root.

What is now happening, to fight the prophesies of 1984, is the political Right is not just staying on the defensive, trying to hold onto territory against Socialist social engineering. It has decided to finally go on the offense, and drive the socialist back to the sea; imagination. Who ever thought abortion would be on the table? Abortion was a throw back to USSR and China and centralized population control. Or that Twitter would have to be honest in terms of censoring content thereby losing value as a propaganda tool for the Socialist state. An appeal to money made Twitter loose its idealism.

The future may be a good novel for someone to write. It could begin with the rise of the events of the book of 1984; push toward monarchal socialism away free citizens, since 1948. A resistance starts to form in 1980, and the threat is stopped in stages, and then neutralized, and freedom restored. Now the story of 2001 is possible, using the innovation of the private sector less hindered by the thumb of central planning.

While various distopian stories have their odds and ends there are a few common threads.

1. the system has a near total monopoly on information.
2. The family system is toast.
3. There was a a very strictly imposed legal system that is quite unfairly administered.
