There are several countries with laws that most of us think are brutal and unjust but what can we do about Pakistan which seems to have gone so far backwards since gaining independence from GB and/or India.

Except that you yourself said that the Quran did advocate violent punishment for adultery. Specifically lashes. Anyone psychotic enough beat another human being senseless with whips, would probably more than willing to kill a human as well. It really is sad to see that there are still people out there who advocate and defend such primitive, blood-thirsty, bronze-age punishments to this day. I'm rather cynical, too, but as Penumbra mentioned, for such widespread extreme interfamilial violence and murder to be so socially acceptable in some parts of the world really is mind-boggling and aberrant.
