Should qualified immunity end?

Meanwhile the Trump party in Iowa wants to make qualified immunity into law Iowa Senate Approves Bill That Would Add Qualified Immunity To The State Law Books

Given the job of being a cop, there should be a reasonable way to look at actions that result from that job. If a cop does not have the training to handle certain situations, is it always the cop's fault rather than the lack of training?

But that's far from the 'get out of jail free' card that qualified immunity gives to racist cops.

So many of these incidents happen because the police are taught that they MUST have compliance by any means. It's a stupid and dangerous extremist idea and needs too be done away with. Instead of demanding compliance by any means, they ought to be practicing a reasoned/proportioned response. This response was ABSURD for a missing license plate. And the only reason it became this absurd was because the officers were demanding absolute compliant to their commands and willing to do anything to get it.

Almost every time a traffic stop goes awry like this it's because of this absurd insistence on the part of the police for absolute compliance in total disregard of reason or proportion. And yet even after decades of abuses and deaths police academies all across the country are still teaching this absurd demand for absolute compliance by any means necessary.

It's long past time that this horrid idea is sealed off and quarantined to the annals of history where it belongs. Having a badge shouldn't put one above the law, and it shouldn't protect one from mistakes, especially when the "mistakes" cost lives.

What about cops who abuse / assault / kill victims of the same race?
(Remember Freddie Gray?) Those are the most numerous violations
of civil rights.
We have a big problem with policing...far bigger than the media's
portrayal of a few racists. It's a system of cops vs people whose
rights are often trampled on with impunity.

I think its partly due to making excessive and redundant laws as well.

I didn’t even know that was a thing in the States. I wonder if we have something similar...More than likely.

I’m reminded of the show The Wire. There’s a character called Howard Colvin. (“Bunny” to his friends.) He was a respected police officer in the show. He made a grand speech to his younger lieutenants. He said Policing had become a war zone instead of a service to the community. Most of the other characters, young hot heads, dismissed this offhand. One of the main characters internalised this and started to actually be a police man. Someone who served the community. The show made it clear that we were supposed to root for him and that it was a baby step in the right direction

This show aired back in the early or mid 2000s and really, is the character wrong? Even now?

I was someone who was shaken down by a cop when young and stupid (4 people in the front seat of a car - bench seats). The cop took me aside and asked for some money - I don't remember how much. I did not have it and showed him what was in my wallet. He took it all.

I'm going to hopefully avoid arm waving by saying that among bad cops, there are racist bad cops. If we could deal with all bad cops, we'd deal with racists at the same time.

The issue is they are all mostly bad and guilty due to their silence that enables and protects the worst of them.

signed a law on Wednesday which eliminates the defense of qualified immunity for public officials, including police officers.
The new law provides:

In any claim for damages or relief under the New Mexico Civil Rights Act, no public body or person acting on behalf of, under color of or within the course and scope of the authority of a public body shall enjoy the defense of qualified immunity for causing the deprivation of any rights, privileges or immunities secured by the bill of rights of the constitution of New Mexico.
