A loaf of bread

Malus 12:9

Temporarily Deactive.
"Is it wrong for a starving man to seal a loaf of bread...." Most of you have heard this
phrase. The question I present is the same as the original? Is it right or wrong?

Sometimes if I have no dinner, or my parents go out to dinner at a hotel, I go into
the supermarket and hide food, (tinned stuff or pasta etc) in my jacket.Once I stole a whole hot barbeque chicken. I do not know what else to do; the salvationa army give vouchers for the supermarkets but alot of the time they are closed.

"Is it wrong for a starving man to seal a loaf of bread...."

It is wrong, because no one ought ever to be in the position of having to steal food. Having said that, if someone really is that desperate, I guess the answer is 'no'- but that is a hell of an reflection on society..........:(

It depends on the circumstances.

No, you go into the supermarket and steal.

Yes, and, based solely on what you've written and assuming that you're still a minor, you might consider reporting your parents to the appropriate authorities for child abuse.

Also, consider telling the supermarket manager that you're hungry, and ask if you could perform some job in exchange for some food.

No, it's not right. Sometimes I've been tempted to do it when I've been very hungry, but (oh, dear... I keep pirating from and misquoting Terry Pratchett) "if you're willing to do something for the right reason, you'll be willing to do something for a wrong one." It could lead to stealing things that have are not necessites.

Also, the human body really doesn't need that much food to survive. Three or four missed meals shouldn't hurt in the long run, plus there's the slightly cool feeling of being feral while you're hungry. It heightens your senses and makes you enjoy food all the more when you get it.

If everybody who were hungry stole, everybody would be hungry, and everybody would be stealing. Stealing from a certain store may make it so they don't get enough money, so they go hungry. (though for all I know you're stealing from some huge chain that makes enough profit to cover 1 loaf of bread. But what if it's not just one? What if everybody thought stealing was okay, and everybody did it?)

I'm just curious, Malus- I thought you said you were around 26? (Or 29, in another thread.) Is it just that you normally eat with your parents, or do you depend on them for food?

It is always wrong to steal in any sense...it's better to beg for food than to steal...if that offends you then perhaps you should know the Bible says if you don't work you don't eat...I would gladly help a begger before I'd help a theif! If you feel begging lowers you to a level you can't be at then work for your needs...stealing is wrong at any degree.:)

Today the costs of a lot of things has risen due to shoplifters...we pay the price for those who steal...but in the end the one who steals belittles himself/herself.

Would you say the same if food was stolen from you?

I don't understand why people have such a problem with asking. I can't speak for everyone, but if someone was hungry and couldn't afford food I'd buy them something if I had money on me. There's no shame in begging if you really need something... it's only shameful if you do it when you don't have to.

Ditto. If you need food that bad there will always be people willing to feed you, you're just not looking hard enough. So there :p .

i would understand why, but i'd still throttle the guy who did it. If you need to eat, you need to eat.
So you would throttle a guy for doing what was right?! I better stay away from you next time I pay my taxes, or get to an appointment on time. Doing right can get you in a lot of trouble these days.

That is so true - and, whilst I have bought some perfect stranger food before now, I have just remembered that when I was in my late teens, without a penny to my name (through my own sheer stupidity), I accepted an unsolicited cardboard box a work colleague brought in for me (with an embarassed "My wife decided to tidy up the pantry over the week end, we thought you might like what we have no need for..........."

I had actually forgotten that. :D
