A month long study of Baha'i scriptures.

Spirit of Light

Be who ever you want
From today anď one month forward i will spend hours every day deep focused on Baha'i scriptures. It is needed for me to gain a deeper understanding of the teaching.
This include prayers and contemplating every day.

I don't know if this leads to more or less posting on RF for me :) only time can tell.

I wish you well in that Journey Seeker of White Light. May that dive into the Ocean of God's word find many pearls of great price!

I will remember you in my daily prayers and may we meet in worlds other than this world.

Regards Tony

Is studying for "hours every day" sustainable?

I mean, can you realistically hope to keep that up?

I think it would be best for you to study little and often :)

When I study scripture I aim to do one chapter of the bible each day, done in two sessions

This works for me

I don't think it is useful to binge-read scripture

"less is more"

But then you may be different to me, who knows! :)

The scriptures in Baha'i faith are huge, and i have not read enough now in the beginning. The month ahead will be dedicated to it. But what happens after that is still not desided :)

What this means is that i will take my faith even more serious and get to know it well through study.
But it is not meant as 8 hour a day study :)

I hope that you get a lot out of those scriptures and that they bring you closer to God :)

Do you have a commentary?

When you say commentary, do you mean like "the scriptures means this" ?

No I read the scriptures as they are in scriptures

No I read the scriptures as they are in scriptures
Basically, yes

Personally I've found having a commentary to be immensely helpful

But each to their own :D

I use English when study Baha'i scriptures. They are translated on the Baha'i website. www.bahai.org/libetary that is where my deeper study starts
My point is that with all translations, it has to go through the mind of the translator. So it may or may not be accurate. With the Baha'i translations, there are alternative translations available, but only the ones approved by Baha'i administrators are used. Language is tricky to convey original intent. We have this challenge in Hinduism as well, when translating from Sanskrit to English. The Bhagavad Gita has been translated at least 100 times, and sometimes there is debate as to which translation is best. There is one site that compares several side by side verse by verse, and the differences can be eye-opening to this challenge. Many people will read 3 or 4 translations to get a better overall picture.

I am not worried about this since most if not all s riptures i reading now are from the website i linked to.
What other non Baha'i want to say or have an opinion about is their opinion, not mine

There is good guidance given on this topic. It is up to each individual.

We have been invited to dive into the Ocean of God's Word and compared to the eagerness of our search, is what pearls of great price we will find.

Yet a balance has to be found, we are not to do that so it will burden our souls. In fact at times it is offered just a few words will suffice.

"Burden not your souls so as to cause exhaustion and weigh them down, but rather endeavour to lighten them, that they may soar on the wings of revealed Verses unto the dawning-place of His signs. This is conducive to nearer access unto God, were ye to comprehend."

Bahá’u’lláh, The Compilation of Compilations vol II, p. 225

We are to avoid pious worship that does not lead to actions in the material world, but creates doctrine that diverts us from God.

"One hour's reflection is preferable to seventy years of pious worship" Baha'u'llah

It is what it is all about, finding a balance in this life so we can serve each other.

(I can add, the study never ends)

Regards Tony
