A 'New' House

Four years ago, we bought our first house. We moved from an itsy bitsy rental. It was a perfect house... if you were a single person, or maybe a minimalist couple. The house we moved two is much roomier; a classic 4-square style, with 3 bedrooms(one has such a big walk in closet, complete with large window, that it serves as a bedroom for our toddler, fully furnished with bed, dresser, and a few large toys), a few 'extra' rooms added off the back, and a nice windowed in porch(that my husband had to have, but we almost never use).

There's a living room, people sleep in the bedrooms, a dining room that seldom gets eaten in... while I love our house, my husband misses the old one... where it was so small, we had to sleep on the dining room on mat, and there was no 'room arrangement'. Stuff was moved where you needed it.

We are starting to rethink the concept of what the rooms are, or should be. Throwing out all typical housing conventions(at least, for a Midwestern US house), we're looking for ideas on what to do with all the space we've been blessed with. Any ideas?

Bed and breakfast? Holiday lets? A quiet library/reflection room, a dedicated office/RF hangout. Big window= lots of light sound like a green room, fresh veg etc throughout most of the year. Kids play room, hopefully to reduce destruction to the rest of the house.

All very good ideas!

I was thinking about turning the dining room into the 'kid' area, being as people seldom eat in there anyways... @Sgt. Pepper said something about her 'classroom' yesterday, and it got me thinking.

My wife and I have just upgraded to a 3 bdrm house. One room is obviously a bedroom, and as we don't have kids we've divided the other 2 rooms between us. I'm in the process of furnishing my room as a ritual/religious room and library. Hers is an office/observatory.

We have a 3 bedroom house. One is a true bedroom with a bed and closet.

Another is my room with computers and such and when I was oncall for work where I'd go to at 3am, close the door and join a conference call about what had caused online banking to crash.

The third has a recliner, bookcases and a sofa bed for any visitors (maybe again someday).

My wife has her own office (aka study) but if we did not have that, the 3rd bedroom would be 100% hers with me keeping my "trap shut" about any and every aspect of it.

It sounds like you don't have the kind of needs we do.

I'm thinking of trashing the idea of a bedroom(for us), and getting a roll out mat again. Its what we did at the old house, and though it could be inconvenient to pack the bedding away, it was without a doubt better on our backs.

Another thought is putting a bunk bed in the walk in closet that serves as the youngest's bedroom, and have that be the 'sleeping area' for the two little kids, and have the middle son's current very large bedroom serves as the kids' playroom/toy/learning area. That would get the toys out of the rest of the house, as they're scattered everywhere currently.

Got it all hammered out!

The living room is going to be the music room. We'll move the piano and drum set into there, along with all the other various musical instruments.

The dining room is a library.

We'll move a few stools into the kitchen and mount the TV out there(its small) so who ever wants a surface to eat and relax at has that.

The toddler's room will have bunk beds and serve as a sleeping room for him and my middle son.

My middle son's room will become a toy room/class room.

My room will become a dressing room. We're going to aim for Victorian style; we'll see how close we get.

The porch will be cleared off and will serve as the entertaining area, in the event we actually have guests(doesn't happen frequently).

Puja room, oldest son's room, moon room, and bathroom will remain unchanged.

Now comes the back breaking work...

A week or two for sure...

Dad offered to pay for any broken furniture to go to the dump(they will do house pick up)... I just took pieces of the bed out. Its been broken and rigged up for a long time now. I took the mattress downstairs to sleep on until the new sleeping mat comes(they are easily rolled up). Figured if I empty the bedroom somewhat, I can start moving dressers into it...

The kids are actually helping. The oldest took the dining room table apart with the tools, and the middle one has been helping move furniture(he's 8, but at least as strong as a teen).
