Well, more of a mini paper I should say. I wrote this for my college philosophy class. This is on the topic of religion and if God exists, etc. Hope you enjoy.
There are so many questions that I ask myself all the time. How big is the universe? How big is infinite? Is there a God? Is there a Satan? etc. People have always questioned the exsistence of a god, a higher power, throughout the years. What it all comes down to is FAITH. Do you have faith in God? Do you believe there is nothing when we die. Honestly, I can't see there being absolutely nothing. Why would there be? What would the point be in that? We are born, live our lives, then when we die, that's it. What is the point of that?
I have been raised Catholic, but I am not necessarily devoted to Catholicism. I have my own ideas of what lies beyond and what happened in the past. I am by no means Athiest. I believe there is a higher power, in whatever form that may be, and vice versa I also believe in an "evil" power, a "Satan" if you will. After all, if there is no God, then there is no Satan folks. No heaven, no hell. It's as simple as that really. Again, faith is the ultimate reality of what we believe in. I had a discussion with a friend one day about faith. I stated that if a person has faith in nothing, then maybe when that person dies, there IS nothing for the simple fact that this person had no faith. If that is the case, then I will be glad to state that I have faith in a higher power.
The Devil, Satan, Lucifer, Pest, Beezelbub, whatever you want to call him, I believe is not a huge, grotesque, horned beast, but more of just a metaphor. Basically, to scare people "straight" and persuade people not to want to go to hell. Preachers, priests, etc use the passed down image of Satan to scare anyone who is heading down the wrong path in life to straighten them up and see that there is more value in doing good than doing evil. And anyone who goes to a baptist church will agree with what I said. Hell I believe is not fire, eternal torture, etc but more of just an empty, desolate place, full of nothing. A place where the soul stays eternally, without the company of others, pure desolation.
Ultimately, again, it all comes down to FAITH and YOUR OWN BELIEFS. I have mine and you have yours. I believe that when we die, we either go to a heaven or to a hell. But the one question I ask myself more than anything: When we die, and if we go to heaven, we are said to be with God forever. But how long is forever?
