A question about "I think i could do better"

Spirit of Light

This question is mainly to believers of any form of religion and who practice it daily.

Do you often catch yourself in think "I think I could do better"?
If these thoughts come up, what do you do about it? Do you go to the scripture and try to find where your own weakness is, or do you just think " Well, I try tomorrow"?

I ask God for the grace to even continue to think, desire, and be able to do better. I then look through the Scriptures, Saints, and the advice I have received in my own community for how to deal with the specific problem and ask God again for the grace to desire and be able to apply it. Many times I have delayed implementation but delaying repentance is just a trick of the devil and something no one should do, for as the Lord Jesus warned "this night your soul shall be required of you."

A combination of both. A lot depends on my energy level, and the ability to stop thinking. Sometimes I think so much about what I should be doing that I don't end up doing anything.

In my experience, if I’m thinking “I can do better” that is because I am straying from God. If I’m straying from God, I often tell myself “tomorrow I will seek Him” but not today. Often times, some event which turns me to seek help from God will turn me back to scripture, and will help me back on the path.
One thing I learned is that God is like water. Water reaches to the lowest point and erodes the toughest rock. So no matter how far I feel like I’ve strayed, the water of God is always available to refresh me; I need only to drink it. But when I say “tomorrow” it is as if I’m refusing to drink.

This is very similar to how I been experiencing it too

Of course we can always do better, but better than what? Better than whom? And by what/who's standard? I think the whole "better than" idea is a very slippery slope.

One of the four agreements of the Toltec philosophy is, "Always do your best." I live by this.

My best will vary from day to day, so my best is always relative. I find standing in judgment of myself for not meeting some abstract expectation my mind makes up only leads to suffering.

Better than what we are
But according to what criteria? Our own? How does that work? Or according to someone else's? And then why?

I think we need to think very carefully before we tell ourselves we aren't "good enough". And even more carefully before we let someone else tell us that.

I can't answer for others on that

None if is can. That's why I'm so skeptical of the whole idea. Setting goals for ourselves and then monitoring our progress toward them would seem to be a reasonable quest. But the "good enough" idea tosses an element of judgment into it that I feel is beyond our purview. By all means, let's set the goal and work toward it. But when we start "grading" our progress, I think we're overstepping ourselves. And if someone else it doing it to us, all the more so.

Well nobody's perfect, so all we can do is keep trying to smooth off our rough edges..:)
Jesus said “No one is good except God alone" (Luke 18:19)
