A true tale inspired by Donald Trumps trifecta thread

Jedster

Flying through space
So, I was about 15 years of age (over 60 years ago) and I had a friend who was about 18 who I considered really grown up and man of the world.
So , one day he starts telling me about how he knows horses by studying their form over many months and could predict when they would win.
I didn't believe him , so he decided to prove it to me. He bet 2shillings(about £2.50 today) on a 10-race accumulator , all to win i.e. every race win went on to the next race.
Well, the first 9 races all came in first and in the 10th race, the horse he bet to win was winning but slipped and came in second.
He obviously lost, but would have won about £2000 which, in todays money to about £48000.
He took the loss well and I had my mind blown.
We then went to the Madeline coffee bar and drank cappuccinos.

ETA: My friend's surname was Gold.
