'MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The names of women victimized by violence were painted late on Saturday on metal barriers erected around Mexico’s national palace ahead of a major women’s march as activists turned the fencing into a makeshift billboard for their movement.
Near the front of the colonial-era building that serves as both the president’s offices and his residence, activists wrote: “Victims of Femicide” in huge letters across the top of the 10-foot-tall (3-m) barriers, with the names of many women scrawled underneath.
Last year, at least 939 women were victims of femicide, the term used for homicides that deliberately target women, according to government data.'

I wouldn't have thought that some of the highest rates of femicide occur in Latin America, but apparently 'of the countries with the top 25 highest femicide rates, 50% are in Latin America, with number one being El Salvador.'

It got me wondering the causes of violence against women in Mexico which is somewhat broader than femicide specifically, and apparently violence against women is fuelled by a culture of 'machismo' or male superiority.
The causes of femicide may be similar as 'Femicide is categorized as a specific type of violence against women or gender violence, which the UN described in 1979 as "a mechanism of domination, control, oppression, and power over women."[6]'
