AI getting more sophisticated to the point something needs to be done about it now.

I cant imagine how far criminals will go, but this already crossed the line.

It's getting to the point where even family members can't tell the difference from people they trust if what they hear is the actual person or not.

Be wary in this day and age.

AI has goods and bads. It can be used for good or evil as is.

However, if one wants to make AI the new bogeyman to replace transgender rights, gay rights, and all that came before it as bogeyman..... it seems a more innocent thing to make a bogeyman out of.

Maybe people need to consider the criminal element is born out of materialism, the lack of God given and motivated guidance, in other words the lack of good.

AI is not a bad thing, if created for the service to, and good of, all humanity. The further we push God away, the less inclined to the good of all, becomes humanity.

the lack of God given and motivated guidance,
The further we push God away, the less inclined to the good of all, becomes humanity.
Then why have we seen the opposite? Like freedom of religion as a right, expansion of human rights, and less violence overall?
We don't need your god to be good, and your god has already failed for thousands of years to keep his followers in line.

So, we can assume means to defeat this are being worked on. Just keep being careful and asking questions when things seem suspicious.
AI isn't the bad guy or enemy.

In light of this, If someone I knew called me for money, I'd probably tell them there is a bad connection and will call them back. Then hang up and call the actual person to confirm if you just spoke.

From the article:

"She is trusting that is me on the phone, doesn't call me, goes to the bank…They coach her how to lie and to say it's for home improvements"

That's not AI, that's old school social engineering. It's people hacking people. I hate that this happened, and yes, an AI ( not THE AI ) helped to do it. But this should have been a red flag.

Criminals will already go as far as they can, and this just gives them an additional tool. A few years back I received an Email from a friend saying he was stuck somewhere in Europe and needed cash for airfare to get home. The scammers had hacked his Email and sent the same Email to all his contacts. I'm not sure if anyone was fooled, but I was suspicious enough to check up before doing anything.

I recommend that everyone study the various methods these scumbags use to steal from people. There are lots of articles about it online. There's usually something that should make you suspicious. In my experience, the weakest area is how they try to get the money, and sometimes simple common sense is enough. If they want you to buy gift certificates for them, think about whether the organization they are pretending to be would ask for money that way.

That's not to minimize the problem, but educate yourself and be very careful.

Evem before this that's not a bad idea. Or just casually bringing up things a scammer won't know. Scammers won't like questions or stories. And, ultimately it was the Unibomber's brother who recognized the language and tone of that manifesto.

I agree that if we must ridicule or vilify anyone, I would prefer it be an unconscious unfeeling glorified calculator.
I don't get how someone would want to antagonize someone just because they have a different perspective or opinion.

Where I draw the line, will be when we develop proper AGI. I would recommend against presuming innocence, and warn against provocation of a machine with proper general intelligence, that's how you get Terminator or I-Robot type scenarios.

The quandary of our choices, are they of God, or are they motivated in self.

Regards Tony
Neither. More people are motivated towards others. Motives for gods are unclear, based in ambiguity amd especially fickle. Motives inthe self are necessary to a small degree, but too much ruins things for others. But when we work to enrich ourselves and others is ideal. And socially that's where we're heading.
