Al Hayat and Al Hayy

I wish to know whether the words Al Hayat and Al Hayy are both derived from the root hyy and if so do both the words refer to life? That is, is the same word used for the life of Allah and man in the Quran?

I don't know arabic, but I've done some research and it does seem that both words come from the root hyy and while both words refer to life, there is a clear difference. Al hayat means the life while al Hayy means the living. Hayat is usually combined with dunya and when combined means the life of this world. There is also al hayya, which also means the living and as far as I see is similar in writing to al Hayy, and (I'm not sure) refers to the plural the main difference (as far as I see it) is that it but to someone who lives, but also suffers from death and who has a beginning , while al Hayy refers to one who never began and will never suffer death. Anyway take this with a grain of salt and I would advise you to try and send your question to this site http://islamqa.info/en. This site is in my opinion the best site online with regards to islamic questions and answers and if you send a question you should get an answer in about two and a half weeks. Everybody can post on this forum, that site on the other hand is alot more trustworthy and guarantees an answer with an authentic basis.

Al Hayat الحياة means life, there is the earthly life الحياة الدنيا and the afterlife الحياة الاخره
Al Hayy الحي means the living thing

Yes, they come from the same root

Al Hayat - Al means "The" Hayat means life
Al Hayy means The Alive. Al means "The" Hayy means alive
