Why remove it if it was there already, please?
Why insert "Jehovah" if it was not there already, please?
And then why name a denomination as "Jehovah's Witnesses", please?
Regards
Hi, These are valid questions Paarsurrey,
1.Why remove the "name":
The rational for removing God's personal name from the Bible arose initially from the idea among the Jews that it was wrong even to pronounce the divine name (represented by the Tetragrammaton), due to the misapplication of Ex 20:7 (part of the 10 Commandments)"You must not take up the name of Jehovah your God in a worthless way (or in vain).
Furthermore The Jews held that the name was viewed as being too sacred for imperfect lips to speack. Another claim is that the purpose was to protect the name from use in magical rites, this of course is poor reasoning, as it is obvious that the more mysterious the name became through disuse the more it would suit the purposes of practitioners of magic.
In later times exact pronunciation was unattainable, this was used as an excuse for substituting it with "God or Lord" instead of the (in English) accepted pronunciation of Jehovah. This reasoning is however flawed, since to be consistent all names that contain part of the Tetragammaton (such as Isaiah, Jeremiah etc..) would have to be changed as well.
Many modern scholars and Bible translators today advocate following the tradition of eliminating the distinctive name of God. They not only claim that its uncertain pronunciation justifies such a course but also hold that the supremacy and uniqueness of the true God make unnecessary his having a particular name. Such a view, not only receives no support form the inspired Scriptures (OT or NT), but also is contrary to the directive that God's name be made universally known and glorified. One obvious reason is to differentiate him from other God's.
We should keep in mind that God is a title and is neither personal nor distinctive. In the Hebrew Scriptures the same word (Elo-him') is applied to Jehovah, but also to false God's such Dagon or Nisroch. For a Jew to tell a Philistine or an Assyrian the he worshiped "God [Elo-him'] would not suffice to identify the Person to whom his worship went, the same reasoning applies today.
2.Why insert Jehovah if it was not already there?
Only the Hebrew consonants of the name of God are know. To exclude vowels in God's name would require that all of the Hebrew names be reduced to consonants (to be consistent).
It is, and always has been a practice to pronounce names according to language constraints. Of course to insert Jehovah's name in a scripture that does not contain the Tetragrammaton (in the extant mss) for no reason is wrong.
3.Most likely to label a denomination using Jehovah's name is to direct attention to that name, instead of their own justifications.
Perhaps this was influenced by the prophet Isaiah " You are my witnesses is the utterance of Jehovah, even my servant whom I have chosen..."(Isa 43:10)
Cheers.
