Book Challenges Nearly Doubled From 2021

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) today released new data documenting* 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The unparalleled number of reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the 729 challenges reported in 2021.

A record 2,571 unique titles were targeted for censorship, a 38% increase from the 1,858 unique titles targeted for censorship in 2021. Of those titles, the vast majority were written by or about members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color.

(Purple highlighting is mine.)

Is everybody still sure that America really, really believes in freedom of expression?

Is everybody still sure that the right is not seriously aiming at seriously rolling back the freedoms and rights gained by LGBTQIA+ and people of color?

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
A request and the actual act of banning of a book is two different things.

I'd agree it's censorship if the book in question is actually banned , not the request as it stands.

Nonsense. The ALA is crying wolf. They have a vested interest in people thinking book banning is occurring to get more $$$. How many of these supposed "banned books" can be found readily available on the internet? Most, if not all, I'd wager. If libraries are biased politically it is liberal, not conservative.

While true, that was the point of the poll question, which asks what is the real target of all those "requests" for either banning and/or other form of censorship?

Once again you accuse people of lying, yet offer zero evidence to support your accusation.

It's trivially easy to find lists of books that have been banned in various states.

While the right hates everybody who is different, the real target of these actions are always "the libs". It's their reactions they want to see even when they hurt others.

I picked a book at random from one of those lists. The book is "Final Takedown". It is available online in every state in the Union. It isn't "banned" at all.

There is a world of difference between not supplying funding for every book some librarian/patron wants in the library and banning. Learn the difference.

Ah, I see....you didn't even bother to read the article in the OP that you were allegedly addressing. Had you taken the time, you would have seen...

"A record 2,571 unique titles were targeted for censorship, a 38% increase from the 1,858 unique titles targeted for censorship in 2021. Of those titles, the vast majority were written by or about members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color.

Of the reported book challenges, 58% targeted books and materials in school libraries, classroom libraries or school curricula; 41% of book challenges targeted materials in public libraries.

Or you actually learn about the subject and that these efforts are usually to pull books already on the shelf rather than prevent them from getting there. That does happen, but you are not presenting this accurately at all.

Sophistry based on the article definitions for "censorship", "targeted", etc. Nonsense. There is a world of difference between a community not providing funding for every book under the sun and "banning".

Assuming only for the sake of argument that this were happening. That would simply mean the publicly funded library chooses not to have some particular book, for whatever reason. That still isn't "banning". Those that want the materials available to others are free to set up a private lending library of their own and get the materials. Ergo, the books aren't banned.

Public libraries don't have unlimited funds. Since they don't, they must choose which books to get. That isn't "banning".

That's one of the dumbest replies I've gotten in a while. So if a book is prohibited by the government to be in a public library, to you it's inaccurate to say it has been "banned" in the library.

Nice job.

So any "prohibition", for any reason equals banning to you? Even a lack of funds? By that logic if the government doesn't spend whatever money is necessary to buy every single book ever written that is "banning". Now that is dumb.

WTH are you even talking about? The article in the OP has nothing to do with books not being available for lack of funding.

Good lord....
