American-style politics hit sleepy Nova Scotia

For those of you who don't know what Tim Horton's is, it's the Canadian version of Starbucks, except the coffee is good and it doesn't take 5 hours to get through the drive-through.

This is $51 worth of coffee from someone who apologized and quit. I'm not a right wing kinda guy, but is whining about a mistake like this (that apparently has already been fixed) the way to get people on-board with your message?

Crazy!

But vote for me and...
-I will give people with a small business $50k
-I will give first time home buyers $25k
-I will give people with new born's $6k
Is just normal campaigning here in the US.

Isn't there an exemption for low-value giveaway items?

At a street festival this summer, one of the local MPPs gave out reusable shopping bags with his name and URL on them. It didn't even occur to me that this might be illegal. Different province, but still...

Every politician bribes voters with tax money. That's legal. But they can't buy you a cup of coffee.

I think that would be like a campaign button, so acceptable. Cash or consumer goods are different. When I was a teenager in northern NS the Liberals and Conservatives would generally pay a pint of rum for a vote, provided they trusted you to actually vote for their guy.

Yeah promises aren't actions but the same motive is there.

It astounds me that anyone would seriously call Tim Horton the Canadian Version of Starbucks.

I don't know how any politician would ever think that limited taxpayer bailouts would help the economy and make people's lives improve in any permanent way.

Americans are so accustomed to their own government screwing them over instead of helping them that they think that is what government is supposed to do. But it is not, your government is suppose to help the people, "promote the general welfare".

But you don't want a government that is going to help people, you want a government that is going to harm the people you don't like.

Congratulations, you got what you wanted.

Always blaming the USA.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

There is a Tim Horton in my town but my sister in law recently told me they are no good, and I haven't been.

My home town is the birthplace of Tim Hortons.

Tim Horton is like a god here.

Oh not here. Sorry. It's like a super empty parking lot every time I drive past it. regardless of the date or time. I keep expecting it to close.

Well in most places in the U.S. it is a saturated market. Hard to open up a new unfamiliar chain of donut shops. In Canada Tim Hortons has a long history.
