An Atheist's Christmas

If that's what it took. :D

My other two options are; Christmas with family, which is too hectic and involves travelling 2500 miles, or Christmas here in cali, which is boring and a little depressing.

I'll meet you inside the computer on christmas. We can have non-alcoholic drinks and consume legal substances. :D

"Merry Christmas, Flynn - I got you a bit."

"Tron! You shouldn't have!"

:D

what's that from jeff?

Why yes, and we'll only converse in G-rated language while we're drinking our non-alcoholic beverages and consuming legal substances.;)

Nope, missed that one. then again, most of the 80's are kind of a blank. :p
If you ever played games on an Atari 2600 or a Commodore 64, Tron is like a romp through nostalgia.

Think of it like the ancient coelacanth from which the swordfish of Hackers and the shark of the Matrix descended.

Okay... I don't think that swordfish and sharks are actually descended from coelacaths, but you get the image I'm going for, right?

I don't remember being all that sad to discover there was no Santa Claus. Because Santa or not, I still got presents.

I don't see anything wrong with non-Christians celebrating Christmas. Isn't it basically the same as celebrating Halloween even if you don't believe in ghosts and goblins? Not to be glib about it, but I think most people celebrate for the traditions, not for the religious importance. Obviously there are exceptions.

I'm glad I am only 70 miles or so from home, so traveling to visit family for Christmas isn't too difficult. Mind you, to spend Christmas with my family... I think I would make the 2500 trip. We're pretty close, which makes Christmas all the more special.

I guess it very much depends on your family!

Best I did on Christmas is sent a box of the finest Israeli wine I got my hands on for a family dinner of a Christian friend of mine in the US. other than that, never experienced anything related to Christmas, and certainly no gift exchange :( I did watch Christmas comedies on the season though.
but this year I might visit Nazareth or Jerusalem to get some Christmas vibes. and get a first hand glimpse of the locals' pagan rites :D

Is it weird, though, that I still REALLY like Christmas songs? Like......"O Holy Night" was always my favorite Christmas song. I mean...my beliefs have done a 180 but I still really like that song. I like the music AND the words, even though I don't believe in them anymore.

I am so weird!!!!!!!!! :bounce
I've always loved particular carols (including that one) --it's not weird, it's just good musical taste.

Also, I love the feel of this time of year--as I try to ignore the disgusting commercialization...like the other day at work there was this pillow for sale and it said "On Donner, On Blitzen...On Mastercard, On Visa!" *BARF*--as far as the smell and all the decorations go. It smells like pie and wood burning and all the decorations and lights are so awesome!

How do I justify feeling this way? Do I need to?
Commercialism is inherently evil, whether you're theist, atheist or other --it tries to get you to spend more money each year!

Like I said, the celebration of the reason behind Christmas is a no go. BUT I still love all the songs and the hot cocoa and the lights and the feeling....

Anything wrong with that?
Nothing wrong with liking nice things, whether religious or nonreligious. When I identify as an atheist I still like seeing the nativities, knowing that the season means so much to others. When I identify as agnostic, I rejoice in the myth embedded in their imagry. It's all good.

It's still worth a glimpse, even today.

I saw 'Tron' when I was on my first vacation alone as a young adult, in San Diego. It blew my mind. :D
I heard so much about tron that I decided to take a look.

People, if you missed that movie in the 80's.. consider it a loss. Don't follow my example as that is a loss of your precious time!

I miss Xmas with my parents, who are no longer living, but it certainly has nothing to do with religion.

Otherwise, I find the crass materialism of Xmas to be depressing at best.

I wish I only lived 70 miles from my family. It would make it easier to go see them and, more importantly, to leave on short notice (we're a violatile bunch :p).

I like the magic in the air. Doesn't matter what religion or lack of you're following, everybody expects there to be magic, and so there is (just like magic).
