An Odd "allergy"?

Malus 12:9

After being ill for the 4th time in 2 months, I went to see the doctor. I noticed somethng about all four times - I had drunk juice that day. Anyways, yes, after visiting the doctor,
I have learnt something weird...I am allergic to juice. I don't drink it very often (Cola is preferred), but don't you think it's an odd thing to need to avoid?
Not just orange either, mango, pineapple, lemon and grapefruit as well.

Allergies are weird; and I mean WEIRD. I go through phases of allergies (Though not to any food:D ); I don't know why, or when, but allergies pop up and disappear just as quickly. Just when I notice they have disappeared, they reappear.

I wonder if it could be an allergy to citric acid, as I believe that is present in all of those in higher levels than in colas. Of course it could be the juice itself or a preservative. I dunno...I play a lawyer on the internet...not a doctor.:p

I would have agreed that it may be the citric acid, but is there citric acid in pineapple juice? :sarcastic
Did your doctor suggest alergy tests?

I don't know. I think pinapples are citrus-y...

Are you allergic to the fresh fruit itself or just the juice?

Are their preservatives added to the bottled juice?

I think it may be the preservatives; if I eat fruit (which is rare) I am ok, but it is juice that makes
my stomach have seizures.

Or it could be that I am not used to fruit juice and used to cola.

Just to clarify for those arguing the citrus theory, you said you were ill 4 times, but you named 5 different juices - were they combination juices, or just plain (i.e. just orange, or just pineapple, or orange and pineapple)? If it is the citrus, then having it in combination with something else will still produce the effect...

I have a weird allergy to oranges. I only have to smell them and I get a headache...if I actually drink orange juice I get a migrane. Mandarines have a similar effect.

You know, M., That is the same that happens to me. However, it gets worse later on.

Yes. One was that Just Juice range and Mango.:)

If you can eat the fruit itself then it's unlikely the problem is intrinsic to the juice or any of its normal constituents.. That would leave chemicals added at the bottling plant or leached from the container, chemical alteration in processing, eg: pasteurisation & al; or alteration by improper handling or storage.

Try juicing some fruit yourself or going to a fresh juice bar to rule out the possibility that the problem is intrinsic to the juice itself.

I think its Coke that is high in citric acid. So it probably is a preservative in it.
