I love Anti-Flag. Turncoat is my favorite song.

They're really nice guys. Funny as hell, cool to hang out with and awesome with their fans though they're a little pretentious when it comes to their anti-drugs, anti-drinking, anti-corporation, anti-everything, political pitch (and it always ends up coming to that!).

Just because you get to talk to all the bands and be a groupie. *goes off moaning about how unfair this is*

Oh, they're part of that "strait edge" crap?

They're not really straight edge in the scene aspect of the word. But yeah, they don't drink or do drugs (though they don't have a problem with promiscuous sex).

I used to love them. I've seen them live twice, they put on a pretty good performance. I don't like how political their music's become though. They've turned themselves into a propaganda machine and their fans just eat it all up without questioning any of it. So nowadays I just listen to their older stuff. My favorite song of theirs is Rotten Future.

Just found this thread while wandering. I used to love Anti-Flag. 'This Machine Kills Fascists', 'Stars and Stripes', 'A New Kind of Army'...all great.

I <3 Anti-Flag.

I met Justin when I was at Pittsburgh at a protest, I heard him talking and recognized his voice. He's a really great guy and we had a really interesting conversation.

Their older stuff is ok, but everything from, say, 10 years ago to their embarassingly bad recent release is not so good. There's some solid pop punk out there- I even like Rise Against better than Anti-Flag since their poppy sound is a bit more diverse imo. A little bit anyway.

Anti-Flag is churning out the exact same music they made 15 years ago with the same middle-school, I'm-13-and-just-discovered-Fugazi level of lyrics. I'm not sure if their "war sucks, party on but party responsibly without drugs or alcohol or meat eating please" style is tedious or if it's tongue in cheek mockery of straight edge. I dunno. But coming from an allegedly anti-capitalist band signed to a major label their faux-cialism is all posed strutting and no content. I'm not asking them to not make lots of money, and they do give stage time to noteworthy groups like Indie Media, but their music is still all whimper with no bite.

Having said that, I do like some of Anti-Flag's earlier stuff and still listen to it. Songs like Indie Sux capture a lot of my earlier enthusiasm for punk and it still holds up. But if it's pop punk that's needed I'll usually listen to Bad Religion and Propagandhi. Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes is perfection.

/pretentious punk fan d-bag snobbery

But I think we can all agree that Avril Lavigne is the only real punk worth listening to? Right?

Though I DO agree that their newest album sucks baaaaaaaad.
