Antisemitism and free speech on college campus

Regarding these university presidents, was/is the call to resign warranted?

They weren't asked if they condemned genocide. They were asked if it was specified in their conduct policy. It isn't, because no one's policy specifies genocide. Congress failed America by even having that performative, McCarthy-esque "hearing",
I wonder if it would be considered morally accurate to consider it worse to misgender someone by using an improper pronoun, than to openly call for the genocide of an entire nation on campus property.

(especially considering some members of that nation attend that school, and have to witness the calls for their relatives genocide)

Just treat others as you would like to be treated and you'll be fine.
Now in regards to some of the most prestigious Universities in the country, there seem to be rules punishing those who misgender others, but no rules punishing those who openly call for genocide. Is that right as far as values go?

Or should there be some readjustment there?

Sigh. There are rules against hate speech. I'm sure suggesting a Jewish genocide (which there is no evidence for anyone doing) would fall under the category of hate speech. Policies are not worded to account for every possible instance of hate speech, that would be silly.

If you want to make a thread about pronouns, go for it, but it has nothing to do with this thread.

Then you agree the presidents of these universities should have stated that it was against policy to call for genocide.

Thank you. That's all I needed to know.

It was asked as a "yes or no" question. No, genocide is not explicitly mentioned in the policy. Why would it be? The whole thing is a stupid.

No one on a college campus has called for Jewish genocide---it's a red herring.
If that were true, they would have said so.
What is happening is that critics are inferring meanings for words they don't understand (intifada, jihad) and phrases they don't like ("from the river to the sea") as calls for genocide. I find the whole thing ridiculous and sad.
What's the worse that could have possibly have happened had they responded that calling for such genocide IS hate speech?

I am most annoyed that the presidents answered "it depends on context" but not because I think that that is wrong. I know it is right -- everything we say acquires meaning based on context, so "duh" of course it depends on context.
Give an example of context where calling for such genocide is acceptable speech in your view.

I have not observed people on campuses calling for genocide. I see accusations from the people making the claims but not from the students.

Just because a person does not denounce the claim does not mean they support the act or called for it. That's the joke of the argument, expecting affirmations.

It's about like the fools that claim that asking israel to end the war, is wanting israel to fail as a country. It's a very strange methodology.

Are there any students actually calling for genocide? Why would anyone be required to denounce something just because others say it?

I saw the lady barking at one president begging for a 'yes or no' answer to a question baited as a strawman argument.

Every soul knows it is wrong to call for genocide of any religious group. That is basic common sense.
Then why didn't the college presidents say it was hate speech?

Evidently there are people calling for genocide, otherwise the Presidents would have said there were not and made the senator look foolish
Why would anyone be required to denounce something just because others say it?
Because as college president, it's her job to do it.

But this thread is about the University president's response to the question - "would calls for genocide be against university policy".

They said calls for genocide might not be considered hate speech. I wonder how calling for genocide could ever not be considered hate speech (unless they are uneducated, and don't know what genocide means).

I have not seen the evidence, personally.

Requiring the students to NOT use such hate speech, yes. I can agree. But they cannot be responsible for the general public acts nor require affirmations to denounce what others are representing.

Keenly worded. Does that include genocide of palestinians from palestine?

Genocide is hate speech with any basic common sense to any American or civilized person. It's just wrong!

Exactly.

What bugs me of the mess, is how israelis actions are conflated with Jews? Especially since the majority that live on this side of the lake are not israeli.

Israel created this mess by maintaining apartheid and oppression for so long. And what they are doing now, is just creating more resistance and rebellion.
