Vanakkam,

Am in need of some help !

There is a syrian refugee family living in a subway station I often go. They have been hère for a while so would like to give them a little something next time I pass by.

There are 2 young men, 1 young woman, one child and one old woman.

Planned already to give warm clothes and scarves, two plushies for the child (all stuff I don't need anymore) and to Cook a warm meal.

Do you think of anything else useful that could be of some help for them ?

Thanks

I don't know a lot about them. How do they cook food? Would entertainment be useful? I know if I was in there situation board games books and movies would be appreciated.

A rucksack to carry them in so they can stay mobile. If its hard for you to carry- it will be hard for them too.

A Can-opener/tin-opener? (Being practical and thinking in terms of tools).

Maybe a teddy/cuddly toy for the kid?

This is a crazier suggestion but (as I'm assuming they are homeless) you could give them newspapers? I think scraps of newspapers can be used scrunched up as insulation to keep warm and dry as an extra layer in sleeping bags.

I think just talking to them is good too. You may not know what they need but you can ask. Guessing they are going to feel pretty isolated so having a freindly face may raise their spirits.

Look out for yourself too btw. They are strangers so don't get carried away.

Vanakkam,

Thanks for your help everyone !

They are refugees, nowhere to go so they are homeless. They stay in the subway for shelter and begging for charity.

I was thinking maybe something basic need, like a toothbrush and things like that... ?

For food I will make dal, it's halal, full of energy and fills well the stomach

My best friend is homeless. I gave him thick jeans (he asked for) and a raimproof, thick cotton coat waist level with a hood. A little bit over sized with the coat. Tennis shoes since he does a lot of walking. He doesnt go indoors because who he bunks with are rapist and murderers.

It also depends if they travel or stay in one place ans the weather is like.

One of the best gifts is a good long conversation (sit with them on the ground or steps rather than over them). Give them more than a dollar, maybe a ten or twenty.

I met one guy we were chit chattin. He said he savesball his coins and once a year he has enough to stay at a motel.

My friend saves his gov check to see a lawyer among other things we wouldnt think of saving up for.

There are many things you can do. A lot of homeless here have a lot of pride so asking them about how they get around is somewhat of an insult. Churches help (temples?) without needing to be a parishner.

Catholic charities, if youre in the states, help with shelter, rent, and food.
