Are beauty contests harmful?

Most of the women who take part in these are at a level of physichal beauty that no women can really match, this can lead to unhealthy obsessions with trying to be admired just for your surface value.

Absolutely. Women in the US are being told they should be competing with men for top jobs and getting higher education instead of becoming homemakers, yet society still places the most importance on a woman's physical appearance. Considering how inconsequential beauty is, I think it is a travesty that we continue to hold beauty pageants, which only reinforce the idea that women are around to be looked at.

Even a spelling bee could be harmful if it caused people to become obsessed with spelling. To the extent that beauty contests cause people to become obsessed with beauty, they are harmful. But if taken in perspective, I don't think they are too harmful.

Sunstone, I agree with you completely. Fishing is bad if it causes you to spend most days and nights out on a river, while you neglect your wife - that would be bad. There are very few things which are inherently 'bad'.

I think paying too much attention on beauty contests, making them 'the be all and end all' of a girl's life might no be the best course for her. She might be tempted to diet to extremes, just for the sake of the sight of what people consider to be 'A good figure'.

Yes, it could also be said that young girls the world over believe that they look 'bad' unless they can manage to emulate beauty queens, and that can lead to all sorts of maladaptive behaviour. It can also lead to feelings of very low self worth............:)

When I was younger beauty competitions were all the rage.
I never ever picked a winner. They were all too hard for my taste.
I think any local high street has more beautiful and more real girls than any beauty parade.

I don't think competitions are often harmful but I can't see they do any good either.
But I am sure that neither we nor the girls involved shoud see them as a serious part of their lives.

They can be, but its not a major concern for me. Too much of anything can lead to harm(maybe not anything, but nearly).

Reminds me of a movie ad I watched in the days I still owned a TV set. The story was supposed to deal with one beautiful and one ugly girl. I thought that one of them was really attractive, but didn't find the other one too ugly, so I was quite puzzled.

After at least five minutes of the commercial, I realized that I'd got the intended ugly vs. beautiful labels mixed up.
