Are eggs vegetarian?

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in another forum since the reason why I am vegetarian was because of being a Vaishnava for years.

Ever since I came away from being a fundamentalist, I have re-addressed the issue of being a vegetarian and eating eggs, and I am not sure of whether I should eat them or not.

So I understand these principles:
Against: eggs are chicken periods, and are capable of holding life, even if unfertilised. They are high in protein because they are liquid flesh. Eating eggs would be as controversial as eating a human placenta. The high cholesterol level in eggs is a strong indication that it is not for human consumption.

For: they are unfertilised and are not alive, and the chicken already must produce the egg whether unfertilised or not. It is not alive, but a by-product of the animal, and nothing is deliberately killed or murdered.

So what do you all think? Will eating eggs ever be sattvic?

I lean more towards them being sattvic if unfertilised and I will eat things with egg in them. I don't like eggs on their own though. Bleh. Also they're not the most healthy things, so I think if one is going to eat them, it should be in moderation. Like in cakes. :D:D

I know people who have eaten their own afterbirth. Seems weird, really, but is this just dualism?

'eggs are unfertilised' accepted but then you sure kill a life when you do not allow it to fertilize or let borne.
the question here is about killing life or eating an egg?
eating egg sure from my side is non-vegetarian.

Being a vegetarian myself but not a hindu, I have no problem eating them. But I don't believe conscious life begins at conception unless we're talking about animation.

Despite the high cholesterol, eggs haven't been shown to really be that bad for you, especially if you don't consume high amounts of saturated and trans fats. And if your worried, the yolk contains most of the cholesterol and separating it isn't too difficult if you don't have a separator.

I have no ethical issues with eating unfertilised eggs. I just think they are really gross.

I know I will destroy the joy of egg eating, for all those who read this... still... it needs to be said.

In the modern practice of industrial farming. When egg laying chicks are being hatched. All the male chicks are of no use. So they are just discarded. Sometimes they are put in grinders or just thrown away in plastic bags and die by slow suffocation. The death of these animals are not monitored in any way. The whole thing is quite ugly.

I accept eggs in dough I prepare for cookies or cakes...generally speaking I don't like eggs. However, does not eating eggs not put you rather into the vegan section?

In Western Vegetarianism, yes, eggs are vegetarian.

In Hindu-style Vegetarianism (as I call it), no, they're not.
