Are prostitutes sex offenders?

It appears that placing prostitutes on sex offender registries is the next thing to do?

Are they sex offenders?

Should the johns be placed on sex offender registries?

Now from state to state some of this is already done to some extent. And obviously, a prostitute who is underage would definitely land a john on a sex offender registry.

But how does this help anyone?

I say it doesn't.

Usually when I think of a sex offender, I envision a middle aged guy sexually molesting children or some guy who rapes a woman.

I just cannot see how a prostitute would fit this profile since both parties are consenting.

It's over my head but then again there was a time not too long ago when dildos were illegal to to own in good ole' Texas.

When they spread the term "sex offender" around too thin it loses it's weight and meaning as a word. Can we really equate consenting adults selling sex in privacy to rapists who prey upon and severely harm innocent people and place them under the exact same label? If something is victimless it shouldn't be a crime.

I'd say not. The whole point of having a sex offender registry is public safety: sexual predators are dangerous criminals that tend to have a high rate of re-offense. The idea is that the risk is so great to the community from this person that it warrants this extreme response.

If we're talking about child prostitution or a john that's assaulted a prostitute, then that's one thing, but putting a run-of-the-mill john on a sex offender registry isn't about public safety; it's about shaming the john.

Putting johns on sex offender registries already occurs in some States. New York and Missouri are a couple.

National guidelines do not recommend consensual sex between adults, including prostitution, as being an act eligible for status on a sex offender registry. But that many states consider soliciting prostitution a sex crime, misdemeanor or no, they can land someone on a list. But I think the majority of them only deal with the solicitation of minors which would still fall under a different definition of crime.

Placing prostitutes on a sex offender registry is a new thing that appears to be coming out of New Orleans. But I'm still trying to verify the accuracy of the story on that. A poll on MSNBC asked the same question about placing prostitutes on sex offender lists. So my comment about people suggesting it really doesn't reflect a massive mood.

Sex offenders lists are really more trouble than they're worth, except for those deemed likely repeat offenders. More importantly, when such lists exist and are accessible by the public, it makes it REALLY easy to pick a target to vigilante on.

The root of all *THOUGHTS* is the mind and so any crime considered crime or illegal or immoral or anti-social starts there.
Now when prostitutes involve in sex they do not think as they will be just doing a job [profession] and possibly cracking their knuckles when a man is on her. Surely the man's mind will be working overtime.
Meaning one needs to develop a MIND READER to detect sex offenders even if they do not engage in the act as their minds would be *raping* while walking on the footpath.

I think it's absurd to add prostitution to the list of sex offender acts. Like FH said, when a word is thrown around so loosely, it loses all power. If this comes to pass, soon they'll be locking up homosexuals as sex offenders, and sodomites and I don't even wanna know what they'll do to the BDSM crowd! It's absolutely ridiculous.

I don't think they should be, unless they are raping people or molesting children... Prostitutes generally have sex with consenting adults, so I don't see how they are sex offenders...
