Are snakes okay?

Would you participate in a religion that required you to handle snakes? Why or why not?

It would depend on the kind of the snakes which I were supposed to handle. Not anything extremely poisonous. The second question arises, whether I would ever participate in religion. Hmm.....I am not sure... :)

At this point in my life, I wouldn't participate in a religion that required me to do anything. I had enough of that earlier in my life.

As for handling snakes -- I'd rather not, thank you.

i had a snake and i did hold it, naturally. i think one must admire that coldness to enjoy physical contact with them. i don't enjoy it. i admire the creature but coldness is unbreakable for me

I would participate in rituals dealing with snakes if they were not venomous and the snakes were not to be harmed.

Yes, snakes are okay.

The first people thought of are of course, the crazy christians dancing with hots saying that God is willing the snakes not to bite them or some ridiculousness like that.

I am sure there are other religions that have snake related rituals though.

When I was belly dancing I would dance with my snake. :)

They don't mind as long as you don't move fast with them, you keep the bass down, and you fully support their body weight.

oh wait let's see, why would I?

because I think snakes are really cool creatures, and they are welcome in my personal space anytime if they are not hots.

No, definitely not. No snake handling church for me

willamena only mention "religion"; she didn't specify which religion.

So it is not necessarily a Christian church.

Some ancient Egyptian cults revered snakes, especially the cobra. The snake goddess, Wadjet, was protector of Horus, hence she was protect of kings. Wadjet was identified with the cobra, a sign of kingship.

The ancient Minoan society in Crete seemed to revere both bulls and snakes. There are some figurines showing either priestess or actual goddess, holding snakes in both hands.

Would I hold or handle snakes? Not if I can help it. I don't hate snakes because of the silly Christian linking the snake to the Devil. I just fear them, because they simply gives me the creeps.

Other than perhaps some symbolic meaning, I do not see the point of using actual, living snakes in religion and/or religious ceremonies.

Hey, whatever floats their boats.

But I certainly wouldn't participate in a religion that states I will die, whether from a snake bite or self inflicted arsenic poisoning, because it as "God's will" or that I wasn't "pure enough".

I don't have any problem with snakes, so as long as they aren't poisonous snakes I wouldn't mind. I would have to ask though: Why is it required? What benefit does this religion have for me? and most importantly, are the snakes properly cared for?

I like snakes, I would handle a non-venomous snake during a ritual setting as they are symbolic of Leviathan the Eternal Serpent of the Abyss, and the Egyptian Set-Heh= "the Eternal Set" whose form was a serpent. And of course, Lucifer when he took upon the form of a serpent when he tempted Eve to eat the "forbidden fruit" from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Which is a metaphor depicting the Dark Gift, for when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit they saw that they were naked, they became Aware of their Selves and were for ever Seperated from God.
