Are squirrels ungrateful.

This morning when I went to feed the birds in my garden. A squirrel ran out and scampered around my feet. So I gave it a couple of peanuts. These it promptly ran off and buried in the corner of the garden. So I gave it another which it ate.
As I returned indoors it followed me into the kitchen and begged by sitting up and looking at me, So I gave it another nut.
As I bent down to put another on the floor in front of me, it promptly bit me deeply on the finger.
Lots of blood and TCP and a plaster later, it had gone again.
I have not seen it before but it must be used to humans.

Not a mention of thanks, but may be a permanent mark to remember him by.

Seems to me perhaps you are judging the squirrel by human standards?

Perhaps said squirrel attempted to give you a kiss and its teeth got in the way?

Squirrels are just doing what they gotta do to get by, I hope you got that bite checked. Good luck in farther dealings with squirrels!

Clearly, you've violated some squirrel etiquette.
Were you staring at her chest?

Obviously the squirrel misjudged your intentions and felt threatened...

But I'm sure the squirrel was grateful for the nuts.

Seeking thanks? A kind act is the greatest 'reward' in itself...

This particular squirrel was perhaps infatuated with you which isn't the same thing as gratefulness. It probably bit you, because it liked you.

YES squirrels are ungrateful! Years ago my father fed one that came to the porch ..and it bit him..and he (my father) had to have rabies shots/..

And by the way don't think possums and raccoon's are grateful either....Cuz they are not.

Squirrels are sneaky ungrateful beasts. Those things are omnivores, so who knows. Maybe it was trying to eat your finger.

maybe this particular squirrel is used to humans, or maybe it felt threatened and bit you

personally I also like to look at it in a different way, a way most people would consider ..eccentric?
I feel that the interaction between humans and animals in the wild can have a deeper meaning, a spiritual or mystical meaning
I don't know how else to put it, (I'm struggling to put this into words)..maybe it was a "welcoming" or an "initiation" into their kingdom(the kingdom of the natural world, nature spirits), basically I'm suggesting that it could have been some kind of blessing

My squirrels have better mannerS, Terry. They are often hanging in the trees as I hook up the feeders in the morning. For me at least, they are pretty appreciative.

Perhaps, in its excitement, it mistook your fingertip for a peanut.

Just out of curiosity, was it one of those cheeky American imports, or an unusually bold red?

Recently I have had two squirrels who would come right up to me and I would feed them pecans. Sometimes they would bury them and other times they would sit right there in front of me and eat them, all the while checking me out. Since I live on a corner lot, there are two side streets running either way North or East. Both squirrels have been killed by cars. :( Squirrels are cute and can be semi-smart, but they are also very dumn animals, they don't know when to get out of the middle of the street.

Actually, it's not because they are dumb. It's because they are too short to read the signs.

City squirrels are smarter. In Baltimore they'd use the aerial phone lines as highways. They'd tightrope safely up to my 2nd story balcony when they saw me for their daily spoonful of peanut butter.:D
