You didn't read the article, did you.

Sorry Enchanted, when people start yelling the N word, Sunstone has a valid issue.

The thing is, the people that Phil is shining a light on are the minority of the grass roots movement and not representative of the tea party in general.

Nice try though. :sorry1:

So you don't think Joan Walsh is correct to assert that the whole movement is basically racist?

Do you think it might have more racists per 1000 than the national average? (I realise something like this probably will not have any statistical figures.)

That is a possibility. I will be honest and say the number could be as high as 5%.

One person in 20 however is hardly an indictment of the whole Tea party movement.

Now, to be fair, what would you guess the percentage of racists are in Congress for example.

I don't know enough about American politics to comment. But for the UK House of Commons I would say so much is put of political correctness that if an MP was racist they wouldn't last long except perhaps in a few areas.

I think Rick makes a good point, but so does Panda. It would be interesting to know whether the Tea Party Movement was comparably more racist than the national average. But how could we know that?

Following Rick, I expect Walsh was wrong to label the whole movement fundamentally racist.

That was a crap article.

Someone told me this. Someone told me that. A few rumors and a mere handful of incidents that cannot all be qualified as racist. Fortunately, this conclusion fits in a nice political partisan package. ---- the modus operandi of Joan Walsh?

Do these journalists and editors not have anything better to do?

I would certainly suggest that those protesters shouting the "N-word" and the "F-word" are indulging in bigotry. I don't know enough to suggest that the Tea-party is racist in general, but reading this, I wouldn't go out and sign up with them.

Now how about that Coffee-party I've read about... :D

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I've been to several Tea Party events and have never one time heard anyone say anything remotely racist. In fact, the biggest applause at the events was for minorities who stood up to voice their opposition to big government. The crowds at the events I have attended were predominately white, but there were also Hispanic, African American, Native American and Asian people at all the events.

The events I attended were in Texas just for the record. We Texans are pretty independent-minded.

There was also a very wide array of ages present - from kids to college students, to young families, retirees and the elderly.

Like any movement, there are going to be fringe elements that are counter productive (ACORN, anyone?) and give the majority some bad press.

Joan Walsh has argued that the Tea Party Movement must be understood as a fundamentally racist movement. What do you think? Is she right? Why or why not?

Too much tea party racism - Healthcare Reform | Obama Health Care Plan - Salon.com

The guy who lead our first tea party was a white supremacists...

Granted; I'm not very worried about the typical race beliefs of the typical guy out there, than I am of the opinion that the people who lead such events who are racist is going to be even worse, regardless if the crowd is behind him on a different 'issue'.

Of course they are racists! They were calling black congressmen the N-word outside congress when the HC bill was being passed. Most of their vitriol was directed against black and gay people. They were calling Barney Frank the F-word.

Some of them may have done so. Do you believe a group should be judged on the actions of few?
