Are You a Conformist?

“Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist.” --Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

Do you hold any opinions (beliefs, viewpoints or skepticism) on issues contrary to those held by the majority of people of your community or society?

If so, what non-conforming opinion(s) do you hold? And do you hold these non-conforming opinions due to a deduction from evidence?

Er... Diet, religion, being childfree, being leftist in politics (though my ideal is a resource based economy), having interests that aren't exactly mainstream (IRL internet doesn't count), not interested in celebrities/gossip/trends and so on. There's a bit too much to list and I wish I could clarify certain things but I'm tired.

I'm a LOT more vocal about them online than IRL though because I don't like confrontation and there's no use arguing. But I'm not actively participating in those things, so you could say I "boycott" those things by not showing any interest or participating. Might make me seem cold and quiet but it's how I prefer to do things rather than argue. If I'm with more receptive people, closer people, I might tell them my thoughts and why I think them. But debates make me uncomfortable, discussions are fine.

As for your next questions, I'm non-conforming in a lot ways. Basically came from reflecting on my values and looking for evidence. I read a lot of different point of views online and in books. Reflected some more. There's things like data, statistics and scientific research that helped me form my conclusions.

So basically, it's a mixture of my own personal values, reading and reflecting. I try to also keep an open mind about other possibilities. I have changed my mind about things I used to disagree with or agree with. I just need some strong arguments and a lot of time to dedicate to self-reflection and trying to put myself in other's shoes to see their perspective.

I have a theory about conformism.....
Those of us who don't engage socially as well as neurotypicals tend to be less so.
It's not that we're better or more independent. It's that there's less drive & understanding
to enable it. This explains why libertarians are such weirdos, & are so ineffective.

How are you defining the majority? Given the near 50-50 political split on many issues of American politics, I question whether or not we can say there is a meaningful majority and minority on many things...

Not that I particularly seek to be against the majority, but... it's hard to hold a code of honor and introspectively reflect on things without being something of a minority on quite many issues. In terms of politics, there's no party, group or candidate in my country who holds my political views or close. In terms of religion, there's nothing I belong to though I'm not as alone in this.

It really depends. If you're looking at Indiana as a whole, I am very non-conformist, except for when it comes to unions (I live in a very pro-union area, and raised on the idea that crossing a picket line is just something you just do not ever do).
If you look at a hard rock or heavy metal show, I tend to blend in.
Walking down town you'll definitely notice me. Seeing me run around in a circle pit, I'm just another black-clad metal head.

Right then.
Yes, I am non-conformist, to a degree, I suspect as most all of us are.....just in different ways.
- I'm agnostic and I am for Bernie Sanders as president of the US, both views come from deductive conclusions based upon review of the evidence.
- I find sporting events to be an annoying waste of everyone's time and money.
- I'm a marksman with pistols and rifles, but don't own a gun, since I'm aware of the risks to my family from keeping a firearm in the house.
- I walk with good posture and make eye contact with and smile at people that I pass on the street (not in a creepy way :yum: ).

And other things set me apart from the masses around me.
