Be it politics(a party), science, religion, etc..Are you biased? Do you let being bias cloud your view?

Here's me. How about you?

I don't see myself as biased but I am a little bias when it comes to guns.
I think a person should be able to own a gun or twenty..
However I also think...
-if you don't know how to use a gun, then you shouldn't own one.
-stricter background checks wouldn't hurt
-we don't need automatic weapons
-non-violent felons should be able to own a gun(to hunt for example)
-in a family home with kids they should be locked up
-if needed, a mental evaluation may be appropriate for gun ownership

ALL humans are biased. The question is whether you attempt to learn what your biases are and try to mitigate their effects. You will *never* be completely successful, but looking into standard examples can help.

This is also why I like to look at optical (and auditory) illusions: it helps to point out how I may be interpreting things incorrectly.

Yep. Kind of like anyone that says they never have lied is a liar, in my opinion.
We all have done it.

We've all got a little bias somewhere. The trick is to knowing where and being able to adjust our thoughts and actions to make up for it.
Every fundraiser, I hear NPR talking heads brag
about how they are unbiased. Assuming they're
being honest, it's odd that they can be so unaware.
I notice their bias when I disagree with it.
And I notice it even when I agree with it.
Your advice about the "trick" is sage (not parsley).

It's hard not to be biased. Especially when surrounded by incorrigible corrupt politicians over the years with several actually in prison or served time for their corruption.

There's no such thing as an unbiased human. We can't help it, it's built into how we think and decide.

The best we can hope for is that we recognize that fact, and -- at least when it is important (like judging other humans or casting our democratic ballot) -- try to recognize our own biases and rise above them. This is hard work, and we'll never accomplish it all the time. But we can sometimes, if we really try.

Few people want to call out the flaws in their own 'tribe'.
I often refer to us Libertarians as losers.
It's tongue in cheek, but with a very large grain of truth.
I don't defend us as smarter or ethicaller....it's just my
preferred orientation. It's freeing to not care too much
about being better....& recognizing the folly of "better".

I'm not terribly familiar with Libertarians, but from what I have seen, it seems there is a bit more freedom of personal thought and expression allowed than within the main two parties.

That could just be my bias kicking in, though.

You're right.
We joke that we're "pro everything".
Of course...too much sex work, free speech,
commerce, bodily autonomy, etc does engender
some opposition....some of it even reasonable.

If you're biased how would you know you were biased?

In my opinion... Ignoring wrong done by one but highlighting the wrong done by another, just like its done with political party's.
It still seems to me that if someone was really biased they wouldn't know it. If one allows the possibility that he could be mistaken then he might be able to see his own bias.

So if two neighbours on your left side stole from you but only one on your right side stole from you, would you ignore what the neighbour on your right does?
I'd address the ones stealing the most first. At least the other isn't stealing as much.
