Atlantans - what's up with news about Fulton County?

I caught this odd piece on MSNBC just now about the debate about splitting Fulton into seperate counties. What was *odd* about it was the promo clearly made it sound like people were trying to "segregate" the area, as in people would be asked to move. Now, I know they're trying to get ratings, like any idiot news organization these days...but really!

I went to their website and here's the article they're running:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16773267/

What do y'all think of the proposed split of Fulton County into Fulton and Milton counties?

How much do y'all know about the history of Fulton County and what's going on in local politics that might incline people to support such an idea?

Anyone here actually live in Fulton County? (I live in DeKalb.)

First, these 2 paragraphs from the article are crucial.
The legislation calls for amending the Georgia Constitution to allow the return of Milton County, which succumbed to financial troubles during the Depression and was folded into Fulton County in 1932.
Residents of north Fulton represent 29 percent of the county’s population of 915,000 but pay 42 percent of its property taxes, according to a local taxpayers group.
People who say this is about race are foolishly ignoring the history. North Fulton residents for many years have been shafted by a county government that is too big and too inefficient to provide municipal services for which these residents are paying the lion's share.

The City of Sandy Springs was incorporated in December 2005 after citizens in that North Fulton suburb battled for MANY years with similar stories of exploitation that have driven residents to revive Milton County.

If there's a lesson to learned here it is that government was created to serve the needs of the people, and that when it fails to do so, the people have the right and obligation to change it. In the case of North Fulton, they lack the votes to wield enough political clout in Fulton County, so they went to the state legislature.

BTW...I live in Gwinnett(barely), but I have worked in Fulton since 1998.
