An iftar is the evening meal at which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.

Imam Kauser, the national president of the Ahmadiyya community, said that though fasting is an integral part of Ramadan, other religions share the practice in their own unique way....."

I remember when I was a kid, I was curious about Ramadan and why anyone would fast.
Though my mother (a devout Hindu) was probably not well versed in Ramadan. She told me of a very young Muslim boy who fasted in the name of Allah peace be upon him. (I think it was a parable? I'm not sure, really.) Anyway he refused to eat or drink, he even refused to swallow or spit, such was his devotion. This made him very ill and weak by the end of the day. However because he did this in the name of the Almighty and because his devotion was so pure and sincere, God/Allah refused to let him die and strengthened him when he was weak.
She said, this sacred holy festival is our brothers and sisters showing their devotion to the Lord Almighty, something we should respect and admire. And even we have similar things in our devotions.
