You have quite a way with words, Jayhawker.
It was on a talk show in the early 80's. I don't consider Carl Sagan an expert on anything outside or empirical science related to astronomy. As far as his works like Cosmos, I think reflect his aethists world view assumptions which I don't share.
The fact that he made the claim does suggest it's a widely help position with secular humanists.
