Backpacking through Europe

I have been wanting to do this since forever. Never had the opportunity or the time. Now I can 't spare the money. HOWEVER, I'm quite chuffed to have found this website that puts me in contact with someone who has done it before for real and seems to know what he is talking about.

The Long Walk

So have you ever thought about backpacking through europe?
If so, what has stopped you?
What horror/good stories have you heard about backpacking through Europe.
Do you think it is safe to do this in this day and age?
Would you back-pack alone?
How do you feel about sleeping in airports?

I've backpacked Europe for 6 months including renting a place in London for a while. I did go by myself, although I spent my first 2 weeks with a friend in Amsterdam. I didn't sleep in airports, but thats because I traveled by train, ferry, car and bus, so I did get to sleep in a train station, which is an interesting story in itself.
I began in the Netherlands, then Germany, France, England, Scotland and Ireland.

I don't have a European passport (yet), most of the nations I entered had no issues with visa because there are practically no borders sometimes, or no border check, I crossed into Germany from the Netherlands in a car, and I only noticed i'm in Germany after a while, or entered France by train from Germany, no check either, etc.
the only issues I did have was when I entered England by ferry from Normandy, they held me for a few hours, but decided to let me in EVEN though it was pretty obvious I was planning to work without a working permit in England. I think they just didn't know how to digest me at the time.
