I don't know when the world is going to end or how long our society has left. I don't know how close we really are to running out of oil or coal, but it seems we have enough for a while. I think there's been some mismanagement at the political level lately. Well, actually it's been going on for quite some time.
I suppose society could become more barbaric. With the rise of global tensions and militarism - and the pressing need for munitions, weapons, and other military hardware - our society could likely go on a war footing. During WW2, there was a lot of rationing, although it was tolerated by the public for patriotic reasons. I'm not sure if people would go along with that nowadays.
With resources diminishing, there could possibly be consolidation of resources under regional power blocs - or attempts at such. That seems to be the direction countries are going at present, as the West is trying to shore up its alliance system, while China and Russia are ostensibly forming closer ties.
Economically, the global debt problem seems to be a major weight on the shoulders of numerous governments, including the United States.
But, who can say? Maybe there will be some technological solution. Everyone seems afraid of AI, but maybe AI will come up with some miraculous new invention which can solve all our problems with energy, climate change, shortages, disease, hunger, and many other maladies facing humanity.
Or if not, then society might very well degenerate to the level of Mad Max, where the Humongous goes around and terrorizes the Wasteland.
