Does this mean we all pretend as in, fake it? What does the pretend part mean?
It makes much more sense if one has read the book, Mother Night.
The main character is a spy for the allies. His role is a vicious
anti-semitic Nazi propagandist. Vonnegut being a black comedy
kind of guy, our protagonist is eventually convicted of war crimes.

But the other inference I take is that we are defined by what we
do...not by what we think we are. Consider the abusive self
righteous I-have-the-truth SJW types you've run into.
They smugly believe they're better than the rest of us, but
they're really bullies who make the world less wonderful.
(And of course, it's not just SJWs. Could be anyone.)

Yea, ive come across some of those folks who think there better then everyone else.

I agree too, what we do is really what we are.

I just found a bunch of quotes about conformity.

Here is one I enjoyed reading -

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

~ Dr. Seuss

Here's the rest of the collection -

40 Quotes on Nonconformists

Enjoy!
So everyone who doesn't care; matters?

A true friend can tell you straight; when you're wrong.

well the bible is written at this level on but on super steriods thousands of years ago soooooo....

On to explaining the verse by dr seuss.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

People who mind or who concern themselves with and mind who you are are not you friends.

People who truely are your friends dont mind you they accept you for who you are.

Now if this was a bible verse we would have multiple interpretations and those would all really would just be historical opinions collected over time and repeated back like they were original and insightful! Thats theology!

Speaking of the Bible.....
Check out Vonnegut's invented religion, Bokononism.
I find it much more appealing.
