If you have a good heart, an ear, a little spare time and transportation, you are qualified to be a mentor! You don't have to be a perfect role-model, you just have to be willing to make a new little friend.
There are so many children out there who don't have positive adult interaction in thier lives. They may come home to nobody, or they may have come from an abusive environment. A mentor isn't sent to "fix" anyone, just to be there and offer support, a little attention and a different world perspective.
This is open to anyone of almost any age, but I am specifically hoping that some of you men will consider this. I have noticed that there are far more women and girls involved in mentorship programs than men, and it is very sad because there is a great need for positive male role-models in so many children's lives today.
One person can have so much affect on another's life. A psychiatrist once said that he interviewed a man who had sociopathic tendancies and wanted treatment but had never committed any crimes. Well the man told him he came from a horrible home environment and the only reason he never hurt anybody is because once, a schoolteacher said to him "You know I think you're really a good kid underneath it all."
