Best Dracula?

We just had Halloween on Friday. That means a lot of us watched at least one "scary" movie over the weekend. On Halloween night, I watched one of my favorite versions of Dracula, "Count Dracula". In this movie, Christopher Lee plays the count. (This particular movie is NOT a Hammer film, though.)

Watching it, I was again struck by how awesome Lee is in the role. His Hammer portrayals of Dracula (Horror of Dracula and its sequels) are, to me, the definitive versions of the character. I know a lot of people think Bela Lugosi is the best; but, I am going to throw down the gauntlet and declare Christopher Lee as THE best Dracula.

What do others think? Anyone here want to defend Lugosi? Someone want to offer up Gary Oldman as their choice? This is the thread for it!

Gary Oldman by far.Bram Stokers Dracula was one of my all time favorite movies.I even named one of my daughters after one of the characters in the movie.

Did you ever see Willem Dafoe play Dracula? Creepy!

My personal favourite is "Lestat de Lioncourt" but that's me. Gary Oldman was great as well. I never read Bram Stokers Dracula. The movie puts me asleep....

I think Bela Lugosi brings a certain charm to the character, but not sure I'd argue he's the best.

Dirty Penguin: well then get to reading! Dracula is mandatory.

My problem with the Coppola version of Dracula is the inclusion of the love story involving Dracula and Mina. That part drives me crazy! The whole point is that Dracula IS a monster! He is not brooding because he misses his true love. He represents depravity and evil. Having said that, I do think Gary Oldman did a great job in the role. He has the look, especially when he turns younger and has the cool John Lennon glasses. ;)

I'm rather fond of Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I thought he did an excellent job as an anti-villain.

I strongly recommend watching some of the Hammer films where Lee plays Dracula and Peter Cushing plays Van Helsing. They are awesome! All of the Hammer films are pretty cool and must-sees for all fans of classic horror.

Start with "Horror of Dracula."

Thanks, man! :)
