I'm sitting here listening to the All American Rejects. They've been slowly, very slowly, growing on me for the last three years, but I am really beginning to like them. I don't listen to much modern alt/rock, but I do really like some of these groups such as Coheed and Cambria, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, and Thrice. As this isn't really my kind of music, I was wondering what bands people liked who like this kind of music. Maybe I'll pick up some more.

Mars Volta are good in an incredibly weird way. I wouldn't go picking them up if you're not slightly neurotic, because they'll make you that way ;)

Ok, just to make sure we're clear, I like barely any of the bands you've listed however I hope to turn you on to some really good newish Alternative. I'll just go with a listing in no particular order... or maybe just the ones I like most to least

Yawning Man
Isis
Pelican (if you don't mind something a bit more atmospheric, also Lyricless)
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Yo La Tengo (don't like em, but they're pretty popular among alt. enthusiasts)

I need to know how heavy you like it, and whether you like the fast beats or the slower cymbal laden styles before I go any further...

As I said, I don't really like most the listed bands, more because of their poppish and lyrical stylings, so I don't know how much faith you can put in my taste compared to your own, but if you give me a PM with a wider variety of what you're into, I listen to 2 or 3 new albums a day usually so I'm sure there's something I could mention.

Well, none of those bands fall in with what I would consider to be my "taste". I tend to listen to a wide variety of unique bands, everything from Jimmy Buffett, to Miles Davis, to Radiohead, to Whiskeytown. I love unique music. So, if it is original and talented, I'll love it. I'll make sure to check out the bands you listed.

Cool, have fun man... let me know if you find anything you like, I've always got something else up my sleeve ;)

I don't recognize a single name on that list. Which tells me that the criteria must be far more restrictive than "modern alternative rock". Unless by "alternative" you mean "bands that PureX never heard of". *smile*

But I confess, I am not much interested in "bands", anymore. That's not to say that there aren't some great bands out there, it's just that I'm not especially interested in "collective creativity". But I digress ...

So what exactly is "alternative rock"? I don't think I even know what "rock" is, anymore. I sort of understand what you mean by "unique and talented", though I often am suspicious of "unique" art. I find that there is a tendancy in these times for artists to be "unique" for the sake of uniqueness, only. And that just annoys me. It's like being energetic for the sake of energy ... huh? It's just a pointless expression of energy ... or of uniqueness. Uniqueness is a quality, but is not a value in itself.

I like to listen to what I think is now being called "alternative folk" or something like that. It seems to be comprised mostly of music written and performed by a single artist, who has hired a back-up band as necessary, and that does not fall easily into any other predefined category, like "rock" or "country" or "jazz" or "pop" or whatever.

But of course none of this has anything to do with the subject of the thread.

*smile*

All those bands listed (excepting Mars Volta and Wolfmother) are of the newschool Emo/Punkcore style of what is loosely coined in America as Alt. these days

True Alternative would be Pearl Jam, SoundGarden, Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth and the Swans... IMO anyway. What we have now is a complete evolution from that style to another, more of a mishmash of Hardcore Punk and the Alternative style riffs.

Btw RFX, I forgot to mention Trivium... more along the metal lines but definitely with the same feel as a lot of bands you've mentioned.

Smashing Pumpkins: once the best and now, post-reformation, still the best!

Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam will always and forever remain some of my favorite bans. In fact, the last RHCP and Pearl Jam albums are proof positive that 90s alternative is better than ever.

I'm sure many people have noticed this...

...but I LOVE H.I.M. I don't know, the whole concept of sappy songs that rock...it just rocks my world! Ville Valo has a truly amazing voice. And I love the fact that each CD has a different sound yet they're all unmistakingly H.I.M.

I also think Chevelle rocks. There isn't a CD that I don't like. I love a band where the lead singer has incredibly strong vocals and couples his/her vocal talent with a rockin' music.

Makes me happy.

Edit: You may or may not consider these bands alt. rock.

*hiss* All American Rejects? :( Please, dont listen to them.

Coheed and Cambria sounds like a little girl shreiking, and there's no artistic quality to it "byeee byeeee beautifulllllll" *shivers*

Panic at the Disco is doing everything they can to "stand out" and it's overly apparent.

My Chemical Romance is way too emo for me.

Mars Volta is really, really strange. I cant listen to it thinking "maybe i should take some drugs first... and it might make sense"

Thrice only came out with one song that I like...

I'm kinda critical of Alt music cause I'm an alt rock lover ... sorry to attack the bands so much....

Beck? That's "unique" ... Rhonda should really be in here to talk with you about Alt Rock. :)

The latest Pearl Jam was amazing and some of their best work in years I thought. I absolutely loved it. It was received well critically too. Musical tastes are so subjective aren't they?

My current fav (for the last year or so) alternative bands are Pearl Jam, Beck (not sure if Alt is the right genre for him), Audioslave, Fuel & Velvet Revolver. I haven't heard much of the newest RHCP because I didn't like the first single released so I didn't buy it. Stadium Arcadium did make Rolling Stone's list of Top 50 Albums of 2006 though.

I was trying to think of some more bands we like. But, I'm coming up blank....any more you can think of with newer stuff?
Newer?

well, no, not really, I've actually been listening to a bunch of instrumental stuff lately....

But for Alt Rock... there isn't much out that's really good that i'd reccommend. All I'll be able to do is list older Alt bands... but most of them have already been listed. I'm not much help here....

Bjork? :p
