Biden administration had planned to keep Chinese spy ballon a secret from the public.

I'm glad they didn't however. They did the right thing

Do you think something like this should be kept hidden from the public?

No. If the enemy knows about something, then there's absolutely no reason for withholding it from the public. The only reason our government should classify anything at all top secret is so the enemy doesn't find out. But if the enemy already knows about it - and we know the enemy knows - then there's no point in keeping it secret.

I would bet my last dollar that, if the truth were ever to come out, the vast majority of classified information is stuff our adversaries already know about. I suspect the only reason anything remains secret at all is to protect government employees and politicians from legal charges and potential embarrassment (and perhaps to whitewash history), not for any legitimate reasons of national security.

I agree.

Biden also has a track record of going after others when they do the right thing in spite of the government, such as the revelations about Mass Surveillance in 2013 which the public had the right to know about. Biden had a good deal of blame in Obama's war on whistle blowers.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought about that angle.

That is really not from MSM, that is from the not very reliable New York Post. I do not know how easy it was for our military to spot it. This had been going on for quite some time.

This was the fifth of known Chinese balloon forays over the US border. Three were during the Trump administration and two were during the Biden administration.

If we know about the balloons, but China does not then actions can be taken by the US military to put out false information. Remember, the Chinese already have satellites that allow them to photograph the entire US. Balloons are used for up close and personal views that one cannot get using a satellite.

You can't complain about Biden wanting to keep this secret if you do not do the same for Trump. I can see how it would be useful for China not to be aware that we are on to their schemes.

I was wondering if Snowden had any takes on this, so I went and found this on his twitter from the time. I'm going to go do some reading on Nordstream.
