Bigfoot | Fact or Fiction?

I think there are a lot of things on this planet we know nothing about. They say we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the oceans. Animals that were thought to be extinct have been found alive and well. For example in 1939 a coelacanth, thought to be extinct for 35 million years was found. Now they are found all the time.

Too many stories over too many centuries from too many disparate cultures and parts of the world all report a Bigfoot-like creature. I think it exists, probably a species of primate. Maybe not Gigantopithecus itself, but a descendant.

If you know a few things about ecology, it's readily apparent that the likelihood of such a creature existing is extremely improbable.

A creature the size of bigfoot would require a large amount of calories and habitat to sustain itself. There really are not any "wild" places left in the world anymore where such a creature could exist as a sustained population and not be discovered with damning scientific evidence. Yes, science discovers new species all the time, but not megafauna. Where new megafauna species are established, this happens because of idiosyncrasies in systematics such as new approaches to seeing relationships among species. For example, a new megafaunal species is likely to be "new" because recent genetic analyses suggest what was formerly classified one species is actually two or more.

Now, if we were talking about some form of ocean life, I'd be considerably more forgiving. There definitely are "wild" places in the oceans. They're the frontier of our planet.

Pish posh, science has never been enough to curtail a spectacular fairy tale. We will chose to believe what we wish according to how good the story is, not something as mundane and boring as science.

Bigfoot just stops being fun when he's taken out of context = a hilarious hoax on the gullible and scientifically illiterate.

When folks take Bigfoot seriously, it just betrays a laughable ignorance of basic biology.

AND that's why it's so much fun. There will always be no shortage of people who simply have no clue.

haha - this one is rich - Finding Bigfoot : Animal Planet : Animal Planet

One has to wonder if these guys actually believe in what they are doing - finding Bigfoot. This is the one "nature" show that is truly worse than "MonsterQuest."

I do think that it's hilarious - just the idea - but if there's a poor soul out there that takes it seriously, well, that's funny.

It was a comercial for this very show that inspired this thread. :D I haven't actually seen it so I have no idea just how funny it might be. I can only assume that those who follow Bigfoot are at least as entertaining as the Raelians.

There's really only two supernatural/paranormal things that I believe have any merit, UFO's and ghosts. And I'm not really of the opinion that UFO's are aliens from another planet. I think intelligent life exists elsewhere, but I just don't think it's been here. So what UFO's might be, I'm not sure. As far as Bigfoot, I don't really see the possibility of it actually existing, although I do think that there is a better chance for it than lake monsters.

Now aliens is a whole other story.

After the X-files, one has to believe.

UFOs could be anything, I agree. Could be trans-dimensional intelligent life not from elsewhere.
Wouldn't a large animal have a better chance of remaining undiscovered underwater than on land, where it would exist in plain view and leave sign everywhere?

Weirder things have happened, they found chupacabra, and discovered that it's a mutated canine. So who knows.
Wasn't it more like they found a mangy dog and dubbed it chupacabras?
