"Black History Month."

Thats another thing..as far as "history"..Black people(a large portion) were robbed of documentation as to their own individual blood lines.

My history?..Has been preserved better.Because I was born white and so were my ancestors.

Black people can be racist. White people can't. Because the black people said so.
They will forever punish 'us' for something that happened 200 years ago.
How could bringing awareness to your ancestor's contributions and history possibly be "punishment"?!?!?!
And the roots of imperialist oppression of Africans hardly started 200 years ago then stopped; we feel the reverberations quite clearly today.

Black History month is a good thing, but not as good as March 'cause that's my b-day. People all over the world celebrate me by vomitting green beer on the littered floors of dimly lit pubs! :spit:

Also ..I hate to say this..but you are quite frankly delusional if you think black people had a hard time "200" years ago.

Maybe you should actually look and learn during black history month instead of getting so defensive.Maybe(no offense) its out there for people to learn from so young people like you dont think it was one time 200 years ago that black people sufferred atrocities.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"O people! Your God is One and your forefather (Adam) is one. An Arab is not better than a non-Arab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a white person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a white person, except in piety." [Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, #22978]

Therefore to have a specific occasion for celebrating one's own race is wrong.

Celebrating it doesnt = better than others.

Who ever said "better"?

If I celebrate my INDIVIDUAL birthday and others do so with me..Is that celebration a statement that I am "better" than anyone else?

It's not about celebration.

It's about education.

I think any minority group needs to reach the point where they no longer need special recognition, in order to achieve true equality.

We can not forget the past though.

Do you believe that in order to reach true "equality" you should forget the day you were born?

Maybe we should..Maybe NO days should be marked as a day of rememberance .After all if you think about it..no matter what color you are..your birthday puts you in "minority: group ..with no significance to you or anyone else other than it marks the day of your birth.

Fallacy of Petitio principii and Argumentum ad Verecundiam.
I find it ironic that you quote the Quran as defending equality yet failed to acknowledge the many passages that support slavery. Granted, slavery was applied regardless the ethnic identity, but it's still amusing me to no end....

also I would like to learn what does 'white pride' means, as there has never been a single and universal white identity. however, blacks have clearly been defined as separated group by the ruling majority in America until the better half of the last century.
My point is though, is that it is perfectly acceptable to be black and have black pride, but if you are white, there seems to be a connotation that "white pride = skin head."

cheers Stellify ,i tend to agree with, w i m n c, here , i take it history lessons already cover the role of Blacks in US History as well as Native Americans , Immigrants such as Irish, Chinese etc etc , I cant believe its left out , i see the purpose of it years ago ,so what is the purpose of it now?

In 1915, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Rev. Jesse E. Moorland co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). Their goal was to research and bring awareness to the largely ignored, yet crucial role black people played in American and world history. The following year, Woodson published and distributed his findings in The Journal of Negro History. He founded the publication with the hope that it would dispel popular mistruths. He also hoped to educate black people about their cultural background and instill them with a sense of pride in their race.

About Black History Month - Biography.com

are these reasons still relevant then ?

Well, in my high school my history teachers always kind of "put aside" the black history section until black history month, since they knew they would be required to teach it then, anyways.
I can't speak for other schools, though.

Who is being forced or required to do anything this month?

In high school, we were required to do different things for the month. And they had special announcements and stuff on the intercom in the mornings.

I think I've come up with why this is: I think that it's assumed that there's a cultural aspect to "being black" (at least in America) that isn't present in "being white"... i.e. "black power" can be about celebrating culture (or at least shared experience or circumstance) rather than just race in a way that "white power" cannot, because there's no single "white" culture.

Does that work? Is there an aspect of common experience inherent in being black in America that doesn't have a counterpart in the common experience inherent in being white in America? Or is this just another type of stereotyping, in which cultural nuance is recognized in white culture, but black culture is viewed as a single homogenous thing?

Anyhow, I think something like that is where this comes from: "white power" is viewed to be about race alone in a way that "black power" is not.
